Following in the footsteps of Brangelina, we adopted a greyhound in 2005. She was 2 years old at the time and we named her Chase. Subsequent nicknames that stuck, however, are Chaser, Shazzer, Shazzer-butt, and Chasey. We tried to sell “first photos” of our new family to People, but for some reason they weren’t interested. My lips must not be big enough.
Over the past 2 1/2 years we’ve been practicing our parenting skills on Chase. Much like Brangelina, we’re very “hands-on” parents. In addition to meeting the 3 basic needs–food, water, and shelter–here are 10 other things Chase has taught us about parenting:
1. New toys will be exciting for approximately one day. Then she will lose interest and want another new toy.
2. Pick up after poo. We don’t have children yet, but something tells me this one will translate.
3. If she does something naughty, and you want to dicipline her–don’t make eye contact. You are utterly powerless to resist those big brown eyes.
4. Anything left at “Chase height” is automatically considered hers in her eyes. This includes all food, wine, or beer set on the coffee table. Which brings me to our next lesson learned…
5. Talk to your kids about not drinking. We had a booze hound on our hands at the tender age of three.
6. Being dressed is not the most fun she’s ever had.
7. When it comes to grooming–hold her down and bribe with lots of treats. Or better yet–pay someone else to do it.
8. No matter how good she is at home, there’s about a 75% chance she’ll stop listening to you once she’s in public.
9. Children are expensive (G asked me to point that one out after a recent trip to the vet).
10. Last, but not least–it really is all worth it.
