Just a Bunch of College Kids...With a Mortgage

Three day weekends make Sunday the perfect day for drinking ridiculous amounts of alcohol in the G&D household. Now before I get into the events of yesterday, let me fill you in on some of the back story.

For starters, my mom got me this beverage dispenser for Christmas this past year. I used it for serving lemonade at Christmas dinner, but it's fancier than my tastes so I'm having a hard time finding a use for it other than that one day a year.

Then last Thursday my friend/co-worker/future A.A. companion Jill & I had our agency's annual holiday party--the one night a year we all get together, drink too much, and say inappropriate things. So when one of our co-workers noticed a large jar filled with pineapple and vodka on the end of the bar and asked the group, "Want to do a shot?" our answer was a resounding "Hell yeah!" The shot--called a "Stoli Doli"--was one of the smoothest shots we've tasted so we pumped the bartender for more information. Turns out it's as simple as adding fresh cut pineapple to vodka and letting it "infuse" for 3-4 weeks before drinking as either a shot or a martini. Jill and I looked at each other and said, "We should totally do this." And then Jill exclaimed, "Oh my God! That's what you should do with that beverage dispenser your mom got you!" Genius.

So yesterday, Jill and her husband Shane came over and the 4 of us celebrated our three-day weekend like we were college kids again. Jill and I got to work on our Stoli Doli martini creation--1.5 liters of vodka and 1.5 cut up pineapple slices. Shane thought we needed to re-name it in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. and our much appreciated 3-day weekend, so after a few beers and a little discussion we decided to call it the "I Forgot My Dream" martini. Mmmm...can't wait to enjoy it in 3-4 weeks!

Next on our list of acting like we're not adults--a Sunday afternoon "Power Hour" while watching the football game. Have you guys ever done this before? Jill and Shane are old pros, but this was my first time. You do 1 shot of beer every 60 seconds for 60 minutes. A friend of Jill's made her a CD of 60 songs that play for 60 seconds each, so every time the song changes you take a shot.

Jill & Shane--also known as "The Instigators."

Ugh. You'd think this college-educated woman would know better. I'm paying for each and every one of those shots today.

We ended the day's festivities with bowling, and a little Dance Dance Revolution.

I successfully forgot I was an adult with a mortgage...until the next morning afternoon when I woke up to this:

Ahhh...someday we'll grow up. Right?

If only I had today off as well my Sunday would have been much like yours. My husband and I'm moto is "Sunday is Funday."

Power hour definitely ensures a very difficult next day.

Infused vodka is my fave. My MIL (before she was my MIL) used to make berry infused vodka every summer. I would drink them like lemonade. Those summers solidified my future spot in the local AA.

First off, booze or not, I am totally enamored with your drink holder! Gorgeous!

and secondly: you guys have DDR at your freaking house?? Pretty cool!

G+D January 19, 2009 2:15 PM

@Emily--Mmmm...berry-infused vodka sounds delicious!! Well, not today it doesn't, but tomorrow I'm sure it will! :D

@CageQueen--nope, no DDR in our home, although that would be pretty neat, lol! We went to the bowling alley down the street from our house, and they have a little arcade room in there with DDR.

You have to get me a list of the songs that make up Jill's CD. I can totally see making that a tradition in this household.

And this was why I always thought we should be friends in real life.

Gin January 19, 2009 2:23 PM

oh how i miss you gals!!! i love power hours...but then again would you think any less of me??

Meredith January 19, 2009 2:26 PM

I am fairly certain that my hubby would LOVE Power Hour. I may just have to Power Hour it up over the weekend with him next weekend!

Dontcha just love your kitchen the day after a good drinking festivity? Just make sure no one throws up in your garbage disposal--the smell lasts FOREVER.

Hearing about your Power Hour makes my head hurt...and cranberry-infused vodka is what ended my NYE just *twelve* minutes before midnight. Oh, was it rough.

Totally off-topic, but I thought about you when I attended the UW/Purdue game a week ago. Does that make me an official blog stalker?? (Sorry to bring it up; it was quite an arse-whooping for the Badgers.)

LOL...mortgage, what mortgage?

You know it's a good night when you wake up to an island full of empties! Looks like it was a great time!

Katie January 19, 2009 3:05 PM

My head hurts for you! What a good friend to make sure you had cue music for Power Hour - my question is - how did you stand much less dance after so many shots?! I would have been DDR roadkill :)

Looks like a fun weekend! The pineapple vodka sounds delicious -- and looks so nice getting tasty in the pretty dispenser.

Power hour would kill me now but sounds like so much fun! I love the fact that your friend brought mood music to enhance the experience, too!

I am definitely trying that vodka. Sounds super yummy!

Kaitlyn January 19, 2009 4:17 PM

I've done a power hour once. I was 17. Never ever again. That vodka does sound yummy!

Growing up is so overrated.

Lindsey January 19, 2009 6:26 PM

We used to do power hour in college and I'm pretty sure I've never made it the full 60 min before!

Kent January 19, 2009 7:13 PM

OMG D you are too funny!!! We had power hour tapes in college and it was one of our favorite past times - ahhh the good old days! hehe

G+D January 19, 2009 8:13 PM

I would have loved to have crashed that party!

random comment: I finally posted engagement ring pics on my facebook and titled the album "are we adults now?" to which my best friend from HS's mom said "NO! and neither are Phil and I!" (her husband)
