My Sister's Kitchen Transformation
I'm so proud of all the blood, sweat, tears (and wine!) my sister and I put into transforming her kitchen from the red-headed stepchild of her home, to the beautiful and budget-friendly space she's no longer embarrassed to introduce to her friends. So proud, in fact, that it's my next republished post. Enjoy!

My younger sister, Brittny, bought her first house about a year ago. Unfortunately she lives 4 hours north of me, but when I get up to visit we make the most of it by working on home improvement projects. Our main project has been her kitchen--the whole space was very dark and outdated. Dark cabinets and trim, terrible lighting, peeling wallpaper, and a floor that we're certain was never in style.
BEFORE:We started by tearing down wallpaper and painting her kitchen cabinets--without a doubt two of the toughest home improvement projects I've ever had the enjoyment of doing. First we scored the wallpaper and then used a mixture of water and fabric softener to loosen it. The first layer of wallpaper--a lovely pink and blue pattern depicting watering cans and coffee grinders--came up pretty easily, but the original orange & yellow flowered wallpaper was a nightmare. It's quite possible it had been super glued on--if super glue was even in existence that long ago. It took hours and hours of scraping to get it all off.
Last weekend, I again made the 4 hour trip north to visit my little sister. This time we finished things up in her kitchen by painting the walls and installing new lighting. From the start I had a vision for my sister's kitchen--off-white cabinetry, warm chocolate walls, and a bamboo shade on the back door for some added texture. Brittny had tossed around a few different ideas before we started painting, but in the end she trusted my vision and agreed to go for it. She made the final choices on both the cabinetry color and the chocolate brown wall color (Dutch Boy's Firewood) which turned out so gorgeous!
Here is the picture that best captures in real life (finally!) what I was seeing in my head for so long:
She plans on getting a new stove eventually, but for now this beast has to stay. Not the nicest to look at--but at least it has a pretty backdrop!

wow what a transformation! Great job!!!
Ahh I remember this. I saved this in my Kitchen folder as inspiration for when we move into the in laws home. She has ugly cabinets and white counter tops. I wasn't sure if white cabinets and white counter tops would look good but they do!
Great transformation!
Wow, I wasn't reading your blog at that time, but woah, that is an amazing transformation!!! Well done you two!
D!! This was the first post I ever commented on way back then ("Memories....like the corners of my mind...") It also inspired me to paint our kitchen cabs.
Thank you!
Wow, it looks GREAT! It looks so much bigger. She can then add new appliances and counters when she gets the money (even if it's one at a time!) Great work!
PS- Love the color!
Wow,
The decorating blood definately runs in your family.
Great post.
Take care,
Lisa
I haven't seen this post before. The kitchen looks gorgeous! You all did a fantastic job. You can especially tell what a difference it makes when you look into the kitchen from the living room. Awesome job!
What an amazing transformation, the kitchen looks gorgeous. I too am a huge fan of bamboo shades, love the texture they add!
That is incredible! :)
I don't remember this one. However, awesome job!!!! :)
Gorgeous! I love the color choices. I wish I could do something like this to my kitchen. But sadly, nothing will help my 1949 cabinets.
Beautiful job. Funny how you switched the cabinets from brown to white, and the walls from white to brown, and went from blah to tah-dah! The kitchen looks modern and fantastic.
I think I love it even more on this post. What an undertaking, omg.

I was wondering if there would ever be a follow up with the kitchen. It looks great! Completely different and young.
What bottle of wine tagged along for this project? :)
You are possibly the best sister on the planet. Wow. That kitchen is stunning. Talk about an upgrade!!
Do you hire out?? :) I'd pay for airfare to PA and give you a place to stay! It looks stunning.
Very nice job! I always get inspired by blogs and it's hopefully going to get me moving in the right direction for my renovating/redecorating projects!
D - this is fabulous! Plus, the right color combination to make the flooring look perfectly, appropriately vintage...not old/odd/outdated! Way to go girl!
Wow, you are super nice sister. I thought I was nice when I sent my sister cookies.
Wow... what an amazing job. Thanks for sharing...
Have a great week... When are you all coming to do my kitchen ??? LOL... Many blessings.
Jaime
Thanks everyone! I'm going back up north to visit my sister in a few months, and maybe there will be some kitchen progress to report back on. I'll bring my camera!
@blondie--It's hard to say which wine tagged along for this project. I'm guessing a shiraz. I was on a big shiraz kick last year!
@Lena--a free trip to sunny PA? I'm at your service! :D
@Jamie--same to you girl! I'll bring the wine! :D
Where did you get the bamboo blind? It looks great and I can't find one at this point that doesn't look cheap and weird up close. Great job!
@JM--the blind is from Target. I also got the bamboo blinds in my house (master bedroom & bathroom) from Target too. Hope that helps!
Thank you so much! I'm still in awe of this makeover - it had me looking around my own kitchen like "hmmmm..." but realized that I had no wine so my makeover would have to start another day :)
just stumbled upon your blog and will definitely bookmark it. I love this transformation! Looks great.
I noticed that the hardware on the old cabinets were handles & you replaced them with knobs. I have been racking my brain trying to figure out how to fix this in my kitchen. How did you manage to cover up the holes?
@CourtneyM--we filled the second hole with wood filler, let it dry, then sanded it so it would be smooth with the door, and then primed and painted. It worked like a charm!
