Bad Hair Day

I am vain. This comes as no surprise to any of you, I'm sure. I've said it before and I'll say it again--I already have enough of the 7 deadly sins covered that I’m not about to start pumping the brakes when it comes to vanity. Vanity which was put to the test yesterday after a very unfortunate incident. I always knew it was bound to happen one day, but that doesn't make it any less painful or any less surprising. No matter what you read in magazines, or what you see on TV, it's just one of those things no one can prepare you for.

My hairdryer died.

(please pause for a moment of silence)

The morning started out like any other morning, with no sign of the tragedy that was ahead of me. I hopped out of bed bright and chipper. Got a quick workout in, and then jumped in the shower for a refreshing cleanse. Then I slapped on some makeup, combed some volumizing foam through my roots, grabbed my handy round brush and my trusty hairdryer---the only two styling tools I use--flipped the switch...and FAIL. Nothing but a light stream of cold air came out. Not even enough to dry my hair, let alone style it.

I had a brief fit of panic, wondering if I had enough time to run to Target to get a new hairdryer, get back home in time to finish styling my hair, and still make it to work on time. Yeah right, I realized looking at the clock and cursing Matt Lauer and his boy-next-door charm for sucking me into at least 20 minutes of mindless Today show watching. So I considered my two options--I could easily salvage my soaking strands by putting them in a ponytail, or throwing them into a sassy updo. I was grabbing for the bobby pins when a third option started creeping its way into my wet head:

I could do nothing.

I could just let my hair air dry, leave it down, go to work, and spend all day with it completely unstyled.

"NO WAY IN HELL!" my vanity cried out in terror, while also assessing that I needed more eyeliner.

But option 3 was already winning out as I decided to put my vanity to the test and embrace the death of my hairdryer as an opportunity for a little humility. So out the door I went--wet head and all--ready to face the day and test my vanity with my self-prescribed bad hair day. (But not before wrapping a rubberband around my wrist first--just in case.)

And because I know you'd all be curious to see, here you go--my bad hair day in all its glory!

As you can see, the right side is doing some frizzy sticking out thing, while the back alternates between flipped in, flipped out, flipped left, and flipped right. And the right side? I can't even talk about the right side. I think it's trying to morph into The Rachel. And did I mention that the top was all crusty because I had put hair product in before realizing my dryer had died? Yeah, that was sexy.

Well I'm happy to report that I made it through the entire day without breaking down and using my emergency rubberband. It also bears mentioning that I didn't get teased by my co-workers. I didn't receive any weird looks from strangers, small children, or their animals. Traffic did not come to a screeching halt when I drove past. And I wasn't even photographed unflatteringly by paparazzi! And the craziest thing of all--the sun came up this morning and the world is still spinning on its axis. Which means I successfully and officially made it through my bad hair day!

My vanity has passed the test and will now be rewarded with a new hairdryer. Got any recommendations for us?

LOL D...that isn't bad at all for a bad hair day :) I totally understand though...I would have a freak out if mine died too. Love the outfit...you look so cute!

Suzanne May 15, 2009 2:38 PM

hahaha thats how my hair looks EVERYday!!

Lori B May 15, 2009 2:42 PM

That's a bad hair day? Pshhh...that's what my hair looks like every day, lol. But that's probably just because I don't give myself nearly enough time in the morning to actually dry it before work.

Ha! Great post! Cute & funny, love it! Totally been there! Went away last weekend and forgot my straightener! Oh, the horror!

violarulz May 15, 2009 2:58 PM

wow. your bad hair day is what I'm happy mine looks like when I try and straighten it.... Maybe my hair drier was never alive?

Andrea May 15, 2009 3:20 PM

Psssh, that totally does not look bad. You're a hoot...

StartingOver@28 May 15, 2009 3:25 PM

When my hair dryer died (say that 3x fast) I sat in the passenger side of my SUV with the heat running full blast (engine on, garage door up) and dried my hair inside my car. Not the best start to my day but it worked!

Your hair is making me jealous, mine wont look that straight if I blow dry it then spend about an hour with the flat iron, if I had that hair I would not ever use the blow dryer!

Amber May 15, 2009 4:02 PM

Your bad hair day isn't so bad. We have the same hair style, except I have not ventured out into the bangs yet. Mine will sometimes start to look like that towards the end of the day and definitely not as cute as it did in the morning. I always have to restyle mine if we go out that evening! Great post though!

if that is a bad hair day - my bad hair days should be referred to as "EPIC FAILURES" :)

Megs May 15, 2009 5:45 PM

I will admit that I have a back-up hair dryer in case this tragedy should ever happen to me.

Megs May 15, 2009 5:46 PM

Btw, your hair looks pretty awesome for no hair dryer! Mine does that little flip in sections WITH a dryer.

EK May 15, 2009 5:48 PM

How lucky are you that your hair is naturally beautiful!? My bad hair day is totally jealous of your bad hair day. For mine, i had to learn how to tie a turban. True story.

EK May 15, 2009 5:49 PM

PS - you are on my fave list as well! :)

Melissa May 15, 2009 7:18 PM

Wow, you girls are lucky! Your hair looks like that every day? I am super jealousssssssssssss. My hair is incredibly thick and wavy naturally. Blowdrying, straightening and styling my hair is a battle every time. When I leave it to air dry it looks like a lion's mane.. no lie. I can only hope my hair will one day lay straight like that!

Rosie May 15, 2009 8:54 PM

I wsh my hair looked like that on a good hair day, let alone a bad hair day! But I understand the fear. I will call in sick the day my hair dryer dies!

where did you get the fabulous purple cardigan? LOVE IT! And your hair doesn't look bad...at all!!

superchixor May 15, 2009 9:31 PM

that's not a bad hair day! It looks really good.. at least it's not naturally curly but you wear it straight like mine :)

sara May 15, 2009 9:33 PM

Ok, your bad hair day is not that bad at all!! My hair is wavy underneath and in the back so it gets really jacked up looking if I don't dry it completely. Don't you know you have to have a backup hairdryer to prevent such issues? I always keep a backup in the guest bathroom for that very reason!

Anonymous May 15, 2009 10:07 PM

What kind of volumizing foam do you use?

~Trish~

Ashley May 16, 2009 7:29 AM

If you saw what my hair looked like when I just let it dry, you would tell me to have four back up hairdryers just in case.

Trust me, your bad hair is still pretty cute!

mrs.gardner May 16, 2009 7:35 AM

cute :/ But it really wasn't that bad! My chi hairdryer recently broke (the bitch) but I would recommend it,dries my hair super fast.

melissa May 16, 2009 1:27 PM

That is my worst nightmare. I literally have a back-up blow dryer because I KNOW the day I have some huge meeting or event would be the day my blow dryer would die.

PS - your hair actually looks pretty cute but I know that feeling when it's not how you would do it. I feel that way every time I leave the hair salon. It's cute...just not how I would do it.

Wilson Wonders May 16, 2009 3:22 PM

Seriously it could have been so much worse!

Centsational Girl May 17, 2009 12:20 AM

I never thought I would hear of a greater tragedy this week after Danny got booted from American Idol, but I must say, the death of your hairdryer is a worse tragedy. Much worse. RIP old hairdryer.

:-)

Danielle May 17, 2009 12:46 AM

Well I'm going to have to hate you now. I wish my hair looked like that after no blowdryer and no styling...not that I hardly ever style my hair...but the natural wave makes me need to at least straighten it. But I digress... and I still like you, your blog and your unstyled hair :)

G+D May 17, 2009 7:11 PM

You are all too kind. My bad hair day thanks you! I'm sure I would tell you all your bad hair days aren't as bad as YOU think they are, too. I guess we're all our worst critic, right?

Great idea on keeping a back-up hairdryer! I will definitely start doing that from now on! Either that, or use the car vents as a hairdryer--or a turban--both helpful suggestion, lol!

@Anonymous--the purple cardigan is from New York & Company. I loved it so much I got it in two different colors--the purple you see here, and a teal blue.

@Trish--I use Aveda Phomollient Styling Foam. It's pretty lightweight and gives nice volume to my fine hair. I really like it.

Emily May 18, 2009 9:51 AM

Oh noooo. First of all, I've had to embrace the awkward flip on a daily basis, so I first wanted to hate you for posting these as a bad hair day. But everything is relative, so I'm willing to let you call this a bad hair day for YOU.

Hairdryers - I need high heat and high power, so I have some Revlon target thing - 1875 watts. It works for me - but remember, relativity. :)

I agree with the others. If that's your idea of a bad hair day, I should never leave the house with my moptop anymore. But good for you for powering through it the day. I think you looked super cute.

You looked fine! So silly! Love your bangs btw!

*stars*in*my*pocket* May 18, 2009 12:57 PM

Not too bad, but that seems to be how it goes. We all thing that OUR bad hair day is the worst- compaired to everyone elses right. But it is a crisis in our own heads. I just bought a jilbre dryer from sallys... LOVE!!! I highly recommend.

BTW- I made your candied apple salad last night- I've died and gone to heaven... YUM!! This is now and forever more a staple in my household... thanks so much!

Erin May 18, 2009 1:24 PM

Actually, I'm a little surprised that you didn't have a backup hair dryer. Like maybe an old standby?

Angela May 19, 2009 10:29 AM

Your self portraits are cracking me up D! You're quite the model. :-)

Jody May 22, 2009 9:54 PM

OMG at 42 -- that's a GOOD hair day for me. Love you anyway.
