  27. This YouTube video which made me laugh so hard I nearly choked. "I think we're dead. Time is going by really really really really slowly."
  28. Reading that Katherine Heigl and her husband recently adopted a special needs child. So heart-warming.
  29. The start of football season (<--that one is for G.)
  30. The arrival of fall!

Pregnancy: Week 25

September 21-27
This week our baby's lungs are continuing to develop, getting her ready for breathing--and wailing. To help with all that breathing and wailing, her teeny little nostrils are starting to open up and her vocal chords are on their way toward saying her first words--which will of course be, "Thank you for giving me life; you're the best parents ever."

Now that our baby can hear sounds outside the womb, I've been trying hard to curb the curse words, while G has introduced her to a little belly music. He downloaded some songs on his iPod to play for her, starting with "Build Me Up Buttercup" by The Foundations (you know--that song they play at the end of "There's Something About Mary"). Then he said, "I thought she might like some Miley," and the latest Miley Cyrus song started blasting through to my womb. It was so adorable! And I'm pretty sure she was a fan of all the songs her daddy played for her.

Week 25 was certainly an eventful one. In addition to turning 30, I also flew to Alabama to visit friends who surprised me with my first baby shower! That's a lot of action for this mama-to-be, but it was totally worth it for one of the most memorable weeks ever. More details and pictures to come--stay tuned!

Floral Exchange

Remember that spring maxi dress I posted a few months ago that I couldn't decide if I should keep or return? I loved the pink and orange floral pattern, but the shape and fit just weren't working for me. Based on all of your very wise feedback I decided to return the dress--and to my surprise I found this incredibly similar top in exchange for it!

Top: Old Navy
Jeans: Gap Maternity
Shoes: Ralph Lauren

Love that pink and orange pattern!

How a Woman Packs

As you read this I'll be on my way to Birmingham, Alabama for a girls' weekend getaway with my fellow "Whores"--a group of girlfriends I have from all over the country that I initially met online through The Nest's Decorating & Renovating message board. As I write this, however, I am contemplating (and procrastinating) what to pack for the trip. I am trying really reeeallly hard to not have to check any luggage and only pack a carry-on bag, but it is SO HARD to narrow my "essentials" down to less than 40 pounds and 45 inches!

This dilemma reminds me of part of a post I wrote prior to my first Whore Get Together, so I thought it fitting (unlike my shoe collection in my carry-on bag) to republish it now for your reading pleasure. Now this might not be how ALL women pack, but it's certainly how this one does!

Excerpt below from my Girls Getaway This Weekend! post, originally published on 9/18/08:

Before the fun begins I unfortunately must pack. I made a list of what clothes I'll need to bring (in addition to what I'll be wearing on the plane) and here's what I came up with:

  • 1 pair of jeans
  • 2 casual short-sleeve tees
  • 1 long sleeve tee
  • 1 sweater jacket
  • One sassy top for Saturday night
  • 1 pair of PJs
  • My flip flops
  • A pair of wedges
And now--knowing me--here's what I'll end up actually packing:

  • 3 pairs of jeans in what look like varying washes, but really they're all the same.
  • 4 casual short-sleeve tees--all of them probably being various shades of gray for some unexplained reason.
  • 6 tank tops--a couple with spaghetti straps, a couple tank style, and then a couple more spaghetti strap ones--just to really be sure I've got every possible color option covered--but really I won't wear a single one of them.
  • 3 long-sleeve tees because OMG what if one gets dirty?? And what if I'm just really in the mood to wear all long-sleeve tees?
  • Half a dozen "sassy top" options for Saturday night. The one I plan to wear, the back-up for when I decide I look like hell in that one, then the back-up for THAT one when I decide I look like I'm trying too hard, and then the back-up for the back-up for the back-up which is really just a cotton trash bag but let's face it--it'll hide my beer belly well be comfortable. (<-- Updated to reflect my currently enforced period of sobriety.)
  • 1 more tank top, because that's probably what I'll really end up wearing on Saturday night after all other options are rolled up on the hotel room floor.
  • 2 sweater coats, a jacket, and a hoodie because by now I have to have a potential "outer layer" that matches every color option I've already thrown in my suitcase.
  • 2 pj bottoms so I have a back up in case I wet myself laughing my ass off while wearing one pair.
  • 4 more short sleeve "pajama" cotton tees (in addition to the first 4) and now I'll think I'm really clever that I'm packing 8 short sleeve tees but "tricking" myself into thinking really it's only still 4 because 4 are potential "pajama" tops.
  • 6 pairs of shoes--a potential match for each outfit.
  • No pairs of socks--because I'll probably forget them. And at this point let's be honest--they wouldn't fit anyway. Which will later mean 2 pairs of shoes I packed will be unwearable because they require socks.
  • And then just for good measure I'll probably throw in one more tank top.
  • And one more pair of shoes.
And did I mention I'll only be gone for 2 nights?

Stocking Up

I've been reading that it's important to start stocking up now on the essentials you'll need a lot of once the baby comes.

Well, who am I to ignore good advice?

Starting now, every time I go to the store I plan on buying one package of diapers--and one bottle of wine.

Hello Thirty!

So long twenties--hello thirty!

Today is my 30th birthday, and it's pretty much been a month-long celebration! Most recently G took me out for a celebratory birthday dinner, and my girlfriend Jamie and her husband Terry came from out of town to join us. Since I knew I wouldn't wind up sloppy drunk or dancing on a bar top, I decided it was the perfect time to get a little daring with my birthday outfit!

Skirt/Dress: New York & Company
T-strap stilettos: Nine West
Pregnancy: 24 weeks

This mini-dress is actually a skirt pulled up and worn as a dress--a look I had fun with earlier this summer, so I thought I'd try it out again. The fullness of the skirt allowed plenty of room for my baby bump, making it a perfect pregnancy dress! It's also the shortest thing I've ever worn--but hey, if you can't get a little sassy for your 30th birthday, when can you?

My friend Jamie looked fabulous as always, so I decided she needed to get in on the fashion show action. She paired a fitted graphic tee with a sleek pencil skirt--love it!

Shirt: Forever 21
Skirt: Old Navy

The boys were more interested in watching football than in making a fashion post in my blog, but they both looked pretty fabulous as well. It was a great night out and a great way to ring in my 30th year!

Pregnancy: Week 24

September 14-September 20
Twenty-four weeks pregnant and our little girl should weigh about 1.5 pounds by now. She's accumulating baby fat, growing organs, bones, and muscles, and her face is almost fully formed (and adorable as ever I'm sure)--not bad for a week's worth of work in this proud mama's opinion! (What did you accomplish this week? Grow any organs? I doubt it. My child is already so advanced.)

I've become obsessed with watching my belly ever since I saw the baby's kick move my belly last week. My shirt pretty much takes up permanent residence around my neck as soon as I'm in the privacy of my own home just so I don't miss a single movement. She continues to be just as active as ever--maybe even more so these days--and it's been so much fun to feel her and watch her!

My biggest craving lately, without a doubt, has been CINNAMON! Cinnamon cereal, cinnamon oatmeal, cinnamon toast, cinnamon rolls--you name it, I'm eating it. I just cannot get enough of it!

I experienced a strange pregnancy symptom earlier this week--I got a bloody nose completely out of nowhere! Luckily I was in a bathroom when it happened, so I was able to catch it immediately, but it really could have been a much more unfortunate situation. I've never had a bloody nose before, but I read about it being a potential symptom in one of my pregnancy books and thankfully remembered what it said to do to get it to stop--pinch your nose just under the bridge, and tip your head forward not backward. Glad to know I'm retaining at least some of the things I'm reading in those pregnancy books!

Week 24 has been a big sports week for me and the baby! G and I went to a Badger football game on Saturday and when we asked a couple sitting near us to take our picture one of them said, "Hey! Baby's first Badger game!" It's never too early to start making her a Badger fan!

We also had our last volleyball game of the season this week, and our team took home the league championship! We took a team picture to celebrate our victory--left to right: Deb & Andy, me & G, and Robyn & Todd. I had my big ol' baby bump sticking out so the girls stuffed volleyballs up their shirts to match. I'm pretty sure I'm still the biggest, lol!

Time for me and the bump to retire my bump (and set, and spike) until next year!

Short-Sleeved Sweater

Sweater: The Limited
Jeans: Old Navy Maternity
Wedges: Steve Madden
Pregnancy: 21 weeks

Short-sleeved sweaters are so tricky to wear! Normally you wear short sleeves when it's warm out, and sweaters when it's cold out--but short-sleeved sweaters like this one are such a contradiction! It needs to be the perfect "chilly but not too chilly" weather for me to wear it, so sadly it doesn't see much action.

Anyone else share my frustration with short-sleeved sweaters?

Strange Pregnancy Dreams

So far I've only had two really strange dreams during my pregnancy.

Weird Pregnancy Dream #1
I like to think of my first one as my "Weekend at Bernies" dream. I had it during my first trimester when I was SO TIRED that all I could do was either sleep or think about sleeping.

I have a group of girlfriends from all around the country that I met on The Nest's Decorating and Renovating online message board (my fellow "whores") and we have a get together every year. It's a big event that we plan for and look forward to for months, and in my dream it was my turn to host. The whores and I were all somewhere in my city where there was this public bathroom that was just one room--completely tiled--with a toilet, a sink, and a shower head on the wall. No designated, separate shower space--you just showered in the middle of the room or something. A few of us had to go to the bathroom and we all walked into this room together. My friend Aly (from Florida) went first and then instead of flushing the toilet, she accidentally hit the handle that turned on the shower, and my friend Emily (from Maryland) and I got sprayed with water. Emily and I ran out into this little seating area just outside the bathroom where there were mirrors so we could asses the damage and fix our hair. Em was going on about her hair which she had straightened for the day, but I wasn't saying anything--I was just staring at her with this shocked look on my face.

Finally I asked incrediously, "Emily??? What are you doing here?"

And then I looked back into the bathroom and saw Aly and said, "Aly??? Oh my god, WHAT ARE YOU GIRLS DOING HERE???"

Aly and Emily looked at me like I was crazy and replied, "Dusty--what are you talking about? We've been here all weekend."

And then I started BAWLING because I realized I had SLEPT THROUGH THE ENTIRE WEEKEND GET TOGETHER!

The girls thought I was awake the entire time, but really I was asleep with my eyes open or I was sleepwalking or something. It all started on Friday morning when G couldn't get me to wake up, so he propped me up in the car and drove to the airport to pick everyone up. He knew all the things I had planned for the weekend, so he took us around to all those places. He didn't want to tell the girls what was going on with me because he didn't want to ruin the weekend for everyone. Once Aly turning the shower on me woke me up I had very vague memories of us walking around town and G practically carrying me, but trying to make it look like I was walking by myself so no one would catch on. At one point while I was in my sleep coma I remembered that my friend Beth (from Alabama) looked at me all worried and asked, "You doing okay, girl?"

And then I woke up.

It all seemed so real that at first I thought it had really happened. It was so crazy! Our next get together is right around the corner--I hope I can manage to stay awake for it!

Pregnancy Dream #2
My second pregnancy dream also occurred during my first trimester. A few things led up to me having this dream. The first was a conversation with my friend Jill, who is also pregnant and due 7 weeks before me. She told me that she was having crazy mood swings, and likely driving her husband nuts. She asked if I was experiencing that yet, and I told her no. Right around that time I overheard G talking on the phone saying, "No, her moods have been totally normal," and realized he was being asked if I was having any of those crazy pregnancy mood swings yet.

My dream was that G and I were standing in the kitchen and he did something so minor that I can't even remember what it was, but for some reason it threw me into the biggest rage I'd ever had in my life. I was so angry that I just wanted to swear up a storm and rip his head off--but G and I agreed when we first started dating that we would NEVER swear at each other (and believe me, neither one of us is a stranger to the f-bomb). It's something we're both committed to, and no matter how angry we are at each other or how badly we're fighting, we never use swear words directed at the other person.

Well, even in my dream I couldn't cross that line! I was SO ANGRY I thought my head was going to explode, and I just looked at G trying to think of the worst possible thing I could say without swearing and yelled, "YOU SUCK!"

He just looked at me like I was crazy and proceeded to walk out of the kitchen while I followed after him continuing to yell, "YOU SUCK!" over and over again.

When I woke up I felt absolutely terrible about "dream" going off on my poor unsuspecting husband. And what's worse--G was out of town at the time and I was missing him like crazy! As soon as I was able to tell him about my dream and clear my conscience I started to find it remarkably funny. Now I can't even think about it without laughing!

Any strange dreams you'd like to share? I'd love to hear about them--crazy loves company!

Pregnancy: Week 23

September 7-September 13
I saw our baby's kick for the first time this week! It was Monday night (the first day of week 23) and I was sitting on the couch watching TV and blogging. Our little girl was moving and kicking away as usual, but out of the corner of my eye I thought I actually saw my belly move from the strength of her kick. I immediately focused on that spot to see if it would happen again, and sure enough she soon let out two more big kicks and my belly bulged out with each one! It was so incredible!

This week our daughter is continuing to grow and she is currently the size of a small loaf of bread. (Mmm...and now I'm craving bread--disturbing, I know.) She should weigh a little over 1 pound right now, and beginning this week she will really start to pack on the pounds. Her weight should double over the next four weeks--and I'll be keeping my fingers crossed that that only holds true for her weight, not mine.

I've been worrying that she gets bored in there--just sitting in the same little womb all day long. No one to talk to. No online shopping. No reality TV. Look at her--just sitting there, biding her time:

Doesn't she look kind of bored?

I'd love for her to have something to occupy her time like a crossword puzzle or an Etch A Sketch--but logistically that would be quite uncomfortable.

And speaking of uncomfortable--according to What to Expect When You're Expecting, this is the week that I need to be on the look-out for skin tags--eek! So far I've managed to avoid these damn things, but I'm not out of the woods yet. Wish me luck!

Goal Achieved!

I'm so excited to say that on Saturday, September 12th--at nearly 24 weeks pregnant--I reached my New Year's Resolution goal of running 400 miles this year!

This New Year's Resolution started off like most--I was highly motivated and did great for the first 6 weeks or so...and then I started slacking off. In April my friend Jill talked me into running an 8K race so that got me back in my running shoes for a few weeks, but then on April 28th I found out I was pregnant.

Decision time.

I could either re-commit to my goal and DO IT. Or I could make excuses and always wonder if I had it in me. (And believe me, pregnancy seemed like a damn good excuse.)

I decided to go for it. I didn't know if I'd be able to make my goal, but I was determined to try. I made adjustments for running while pregnant, and started getting up early to run before work since I was so tired in the afternoons and evenings. Soon I was running every morning and before long my mileage went from 10 miles/week to 15 miles/week to 20 miles/week, as I gradually counted my way up to 400!

Me and the baby, right after our 400th mile:

I'm so proud that I hit my goal only 9 months into the year. I'm also proud that almost all of my miles were ran outside, and almost all were ran while pregnant. But most of all I'm proudest that I'll never have to look back and wonder if I had it in me--that's the greatest achievement.

Seasonal Centerpiece

I've been enjoying this colorful centerpiece on my dining room table all summer--and it's perfect for fall which is right around the corner! The vase was a gift from my mother-in-law, the orange embroidered runner is from Pottery Barn ($6 on clearance!) and the flowers are from our front yard. Simple and cheerful!

On Behalf of All Runners...

On behalf of all runners, I'd like to offer a little public service announcement for all drivers.

1. Please do not park your car so it blocks the sidewalk. Little makes me more angry than nearing the end of my run, hoofing it up the hill and using the last of my energy, only to have to go out of my way to run around a car that is COMPLETELY BLOCKING THE SIDEWALK. If I were a violent person, I may consider slashing tires over this. Or at least leaving a strongly worded Post-It. Car doesn't fit in the driveway? PARK ON THE STREET!

2. We've all been there. You're stopped at an intersection and you see a runner coming your way. You have two options. You could hit the gas and pull out just in time before the runner gets to you. Or you could wait for the runner to run past you, and then continue on your way. In my experience most drivers go for that first option, hungry to be on their way as soon as possible. To their credit, most of these drivers do pull out before breaking my pace, or heaven forbid blocking my path (see PSA #1). But here's the thing--as you're hitting the gas and doing your James Bond maneuver into heavy traffic, I'm left BREATHING IN YOUR EXHAUST FUMES AND GASPING FOR FRESH AIR. Would it KILL you to wait that extra FIVE SECONDS while I run past? No. But you know what? If you don't, it just might kill me.

While this may seem like more of a rant than a PSA, I hope you can all see beyond my bitching need to use the Caps Lock key and keep these things in mind the next time you're behind the wheel. A little thoughtfulness all around will keep everyone's feel-good endorphins running high, which in turn just makes this world a better place. Yes, that's right--not blocking the sidewalk with your car just might lead to world peace. Pass it on.

Got a PSA of your own? Sound off!

Pregnancy: Week 22

August 31-September 6
For those of you who have been waiting for a picture of our baby's crib--here it is! It was a gift from G's boss Dave and his wife Julie, who are so wonderful and generous, and it looks beautiful in the nursery!

One of the things I've been trying to focus on lately with my pregnancy is staying in the moment. I find myself saying and thinking, "I can't wait until she's here!" Then I catch myself and realize that this pregnancy has already gone by so fast. And soon she will be here. And then before I know it she'll be dyeing her hair hot pink and hopping on the back of some guy's motorcycle graduating from high school and leaving for college. I'm trying hard to stop wishing for the next thing, and instead enjoy the moment. This moment. I know I won't get it back, and I want to focus on savoring each and every minute.

I'm very proud to say I ran 20 miles/week through my 20th week of pregnancy, but my body has made it clear that it's time to cut back on my mileage. The pressure on my bladder has been increasing and around the 2 mile mark the urge to pee gets pretty strong. But that I can handle. What's really sidelining me is that around the 2.5 mile mark my feet start getting really sore and tingly, and by the 3 mile mark they feel almost numb--like I'm running on stumps. I've tried loosening my shoelaces and stretching longer before and after my runs, but nothing seems to help. Is this my body's way of telling me it's not happy about lugging this big old belly around? (Possibly.) Or punishment for continuing to wear heels every day? (Probably.) Either way, I've decided to start limiting my distances to 2 miles/run and right now that is feeling much better.

On to baby stats! This week our little girl should be nearly 8 inches long--about the size of a small doll. She can now perceive lightness and darkness and can also hear my heartbeat and all my other bodily functions (all privacy is lost when it comes to pregnancy--this is to prepare you for motherhood, I'm guessing). Her eyelashes and eyebrows are formed, and she is developing her sense of touch, so maybe now she can feel it too when she sucker-punches me in the gut!

The highlight of week 22? G and I went to the Taste of Madison (an annual food festival in our city) on Sunday and I had deep fried cheese curds, a cream puff, a slice of turtle cheesecake, and an oreo espresso ice cream waffle cone.

Best. Lunch. Ever.

So Long Old Friend

I was 10 weeks pregnant before I had the heart to finally pour out the opened bottle of wine that had been sitting on my countertop--untouched for weeks.

So long old friend.

But don't worry--I'll be back!

Wednesday, September 2, 2009

Dear Genevieve

Dear Genevieve,
My good friend Mandy is so sweet and nice that I can't believe she's even friends with me. She is the mother of twin boys which means earlier this year they had to sell their charming--but sadly too small--home with a beautiful recently remodeled kitchen:

To move into a bigger, more family-friendly home with--sadly--this kitchen:

No need to adjust your computer screen--that's really how it looks.

This poor kitchen has great bones, but is sadly outdated with cabinets that are falling apart, a stained countertop and sink, and nasty, yucky, carpet for the flooring. That's right--you heard me. Carpet. Now I know you can't turn your back on a house full of twin toddlers and a kitchen with carpet Genevieve!

And I'm hoping my wonderful blog readers can't either! Please vote for my friend Mandy's kitchen to receive a free makeover from HGTV designer Genevieve Gorder on her new show Dear Genevieve. To show your support all you need to do is CLICK HERE and give her kitchen a rating of 5 stars. It's quick! It's easy! And your vote will buy me at least one more curse word in Mandy's presence before she realizes I'm probably a bad influence.

Thanks everyone!

Pregnancy: Week 21

Aug 24-Aug 30
Twenty-one weeks and our baby is now the size of a cantaloupe! Since I don't eat fruit I can never remember if that's the orange one or the green one--but either way I know it's a far cry from her poppy seed days. She should also weigh one pound by now--she's graduated from the oz's to the lb's! (Does this mean I can subtract that 1 pound from the amount of weight that I've gained, and tack it on to the baby's tally? That'd be great.)

Our brilliant baby can now hear sounds from outside the womb, so I've started reading to her at night. Right now I'm reading Baby Bargains aloud to make sure she's fully aware how much her diapers are going to set Mommy and Daddy back. Once I've guilted her into committing to needing diaper changes only once--maybe twice--a day I may move on to Twilight. It's never too early to introduce her to a little vampire love.

This week has been especially tiring and an 8pm bedtime has become my new best friend--although I'm mourning the thought that I may never see late night Sex & The City re-runs again.

On the running front my mileage has been decreasing, but work and weather have been primarily to blame. I'm still feeling pretty good when I'm out there so I'll see how 20 miles feels next week before I consider starting to taper down my mileage.

Now here's a little something I've noticed since being pregnant--people don't make eye contact with me anymore. They're either looking at my boobs and thinking WHERE THE HELL DID THOSE COME FROM? Or they're looking at my belly bump and thinking...hell, I don't even want to know what they're thinking.

Back to the baby. G and I bought our first "girl" things this week. Since finding out we're having a girl we've received some super cute outfits from friends and family, but we couldn't resist picking out a few things ourselves. My absolute FAVORITE is this adorable knit hat that G picked out when we were at Baby Gap Outlet. Oh my goodness it's so cute I wish it came in my size!

And then while browsing gap.com's maternity selection I couldn't help clicking over to the baby clothes to take a peek. This "My heart belongs to Daddy" long-sleeve onesie and long-sleeve polka dot sleeper just HAD to find their way to our daughter's dresser. They're so adorable!
