Snow Day
A couple of weeks ago we were hit hard with about 14" of snow in 24 hours, followed by temperatures dropping so low that our windchills were in the negative 20s. "Windchill" means that even though it might be, say, 7° Fahrenheit outside, when you factor in the wind it feels like it's -20°F. And for those of you lucky enough to not have to worry about this, 32°F above zero is the temperature at which water freezes. The weather was so bad--even for Wisconsin--that the entire state pretty much shut down.
Luckily I was able to work from home, and here are a couple of pictures I took on day one. This first one is our neighbor snow-blowing out his driveway--the first round, anyway. When it snows this much you pretty much need to shovel or snow-blow every couple of hours otherwise you'll never see your way out!
The snow beginning to pile up outside on our deck:
On day three I finally ventured out of the house and went in to work. Here are a couple of photos from my commute:
Believe it or not, there's a car under there somewhere:

Gotta love those Wisconsin winters!

I can't believe all of that snow- I'm getting cold just looking at those pictures. Good thing baby G&D didn't decide to come early, forcing you to venture out in that. I hope you're doing well and that she arrives soon. Thanks for all your great posts.
Wow
The Chicago area is getting a good socking right now.
My family moved to Michigan's Upper Peninsula when I was in 7th grade from Georgia. Your pictures remind me of the UP!
Living about a half hour west of Milwaukee in Muskego, we actually only got about 4-5 that round. By the lake only saw rain.
TODAY it is snowing steadily and roads were really crappy driving into work this morning. Here's hoping we get to leave early!!
...and I thought nothing was worse than a New England winter. Looking at your photos we are lucky to only get 10-12 inches over a weekend and enjoy a balmy 19 degrees.
We got about 6 inches overnight here in Central IL, and it is still snowing, predicting another 4-5. I just hope the wind calms down.
I feel sorry for whoever's car that is!
So far we've just gotten bitter cold in Michigan. We haven't gotten even close to the amount of snow we had last year. I'm not complaining! We're suppose to see 2-4 tonight.
See, THAT is snow. Columbus Ohio is going crazy today because we are supposed to get 2-4 inches. They really need to calm down. Stay warm...and safe.
We got a good hit last night in the SW Chicago burbs and its still coming down. Hubby already did his shoveling duties before work this morning and you can barely see that he did anything now. Guess I'll be heading back out soon! Midwest Winters ROCK! ;) OH love that car pic BTW.
That looks like our Canadian snowfalls. I have to say that we haven't gotten anything like that this year YET!
That's horrendous. We've had a bit of snow and it's caused such disruptions because it's not normal for here. I'd hate so much snow.
we got hammered here too- the city of Philadelphia ended up with 23 inches!! Snow plows were getting stuck in enbankments!

Just curious...how do you take your dog out in that? We have 2 small dogs and a lab, the 2 little ones would just look at look like we had lost our heads if we tried to take them out in that! The lab, on the other hand, would probably love it.
We are in the same boat and this amount of snow is so not normal for us. We got another 4 inches last night on top of the two feet already on the ground. It was pretty in the beginning but now it is getting a little old. But I should not be complaining as I got a snow day today. Hopefully everything is clear for the baby's arrival!
Hate snow. Love Snow Days!
That's A LOT of snow! It's cold & miserable, put it sure is pretty on those trees. You definitely more snow than we have right now (in Manitoba Canada).
Snow is good in moderation. These pictures are of binge snowing!
jbhat
Wow! 3 inches here in Kentucky shuts the area down for the day. If we got this much, we'd be shut down for a week!
I'm originally from Madison and it's so nice to get a 'taste of Madison' from your blog every now and then. Believe it or not, this post actually made me miss the winters. I live in California now and green grass in January is just not right!!
Awww. Wisconsin winters! I grew up near Green Lake, WI so I love your pictures. Being in Chicago we have the same deal but our snow gets dirty and ugly really quick. :-)
Great pictures! My husband and I actually had to drive from Madison to Detroit on the second eveing during that snowstorm (yes, it was really bad, but we made it there safely). If we weren't trying to get home for my grandma's funeral, we wouldn't have gone. Here's hoping we don't get that much snow again this season!
Wow, that is a lot of snow! On a completely different note, where did you get those brown and white colorblock curtains? I love them and have been looking for some just like them. Thanks!!
i live in california. it is going to be 77 today. i'd trade you for some REAL winter weather any day!
That's just so very very wrong. You have my condolences on having to deal with that. I'm in Dallas and it's 30 degrees with no snow and I'm BEYOND cranky.
I'd be downright stabby if I had to deal with snow like that. Hats off to you girl!
Wow! That is a TON of snow... Be careful when baby G&D arrives. I am in Arizona and it's 72 degrees today. ;-)
HOLY COW.
That is insane!
Makes our negative one windchill that is predicted tonight seem a little better... although not really because I'm in Alabama and it's just not supposed to get cold here. I could never survive a Wisconsin winter!
WOW - look at all the snow!
I went to school at UW-Madison, holla! I live just north of Milwaukee and did not go into work that day either. It was crazy out there! Of course, I was the only one who didn't show. I don't care though, it wasn't worth the risk. Today was another unpleasant commuting day.
I spent over an hour on the Beltline this morning - I almost died of boredom.
Hope you're all staying warm in this crazy weather sweeping our nation!
@jmckay--Chase is such a little diva, especially in the winter. We shovel out a little spot in our front yard for her and when it's this cold she's pretty quick about doing her business and getting back inside!
@JenBuser--Oh I believe it! I could never live in Cali or anywhere else where they don't have a snowy winter. It can be a pain sometimes, but I really do love winter. I'm a Midwestern girl through and through!
@Kate--I'm sorry to hear about your grandma. :( What a terrible situation all around. I'm relieved to hear you made it there safely at least!
@Briar Oak--The curtains are from West Elm. www.westelm.com
@koritsimou--Holy hell, yes. The beltline can be such a NIGHTMARE when it snows. I feel your pain!
omg!!!! I am still gasping at your photos! That poor car... your poor neighbor! Have never experienced this much snow! Just WOW!
oh my goodness, that snow is INSANE!!!! i didn't even KNOW what to do with some frost on my windowshield earlier this week..i DEFINITELY wouldn't know what to do with this! y'all are TROOPERS, that's for sure!
