It feels pretty surreal to say that G and I are currently building our dream home. After a year of planning and some uncertainty if this was ever going to happen, there has been a lot of self-pinching lately now that it’s official and we’re moving forward!
I’ve already showed off our beautiful lot, and now here’s a look at our floor plans:

Our builder is Classic Custom Homes of Waunakee and they’ve been amazing to work with. Our lot is sloped in the front and levels out at the top of the hill, so our house will be built into the hill, with the back of the house ending where the lot levels out. The overall floor plan is a 1.5 story, meaning only half of the second floor will be finished, giving us a two-story entryway and great room. I love the idea of being upstairs and still seeing the main level!
The large windows to the right (as seen from the back of the house) are the windows in our two-story great room. Outside of those windows will be a stamped concrete patio, and to the left is a screened-in porch which I’m so excited about since mosquitos love me and I seem to be allergic to the sun.
Some of the items on our forever house wish list was a main floor master bedroom, a large mudroom, an open floor plan great for entertaining, a spacious entryway, fireplace, and a three car garage. We also wanted each level of the home to feel open and connected to the rest of the house, so we’re super excited about the open, square-shaped staircase that runs through the center of our home. See that rectangle in the center of the stairs? When you’re standing on the top floor looking down you’ll be able to see all the way to the basement level. It’s one of our favorite features!
The second floor of the home is situated primarily over the kitchen and dining room with some openness to the main level. Bedroom #2 is Kate’s bedroom, and Bedroom #3 will be my office. I wanted the option to have my office open to the great room so I could keep tabs on the house when I’m upstairs, so we added a cantilevered balcony off of the room that opens up to below. There will be barn doors at the entrance which I can close to have privacy and quiet when needed.
We don’t plan to finish the lower level right away, but this gives you an idea of what we’re thinking down there. The lower level can be accessed by the main staircase in the center of the home or a separate set of stairs from the garage, and the section marked “under stoop storage” is our tornado shelter. The rest of the space will remain unfinished for now, but eventually we will have a guest suite down here and a large entertaining space.
And those are our floor plans! I’ve been envisioning it in my mind for a long time and cannot wait to see how it all comes together in real life. I’ll be sharing all the details here on All Things G&D, and also on my social media channels using the hashtag #ATGDdreamhome – I’d love for you to follow along (links below)!
