1. Whole Living Magazine
I think it’s safe to say it’s changed my life.
I started receiving Whole Living Magazine last fall and it really piqued my interest. Since becoming a mother I’ve found myself being more reflective and really trying to live a deliberate and mindful life. The idea that Kate will learn more from how I act versus what I say is not lost on me.
The focus of Whole Living magazine (and their website www.wholeliving.com) is to help people “live a healthier, more sustainable, and balanced life, striving for total wellness for mind, body, soul, and planet.” While that may sound like a tall order–or something only monks could achieve–Whole Living strives to keep it simple with practical ideas and tips that even a working mom of a 1-year-old, like me, can incorporate.
Here are their “Ten Tenets of Whole Living”:
- Happiness is a choice. Make that choice today and every day.
- Good health isn’t a gift; it’s a habit you cultivate.
- A healthy, fit body is not enough — true fitness engages the spirit.
- Think more about what you should eat than what you shouldn’t.
- Laugh at yourself. You’re funny.
- Nurture your spirit. It’s your source of strength.
- Stay connected to the natural world. It will feed your soul.
- Believe in yourself. Your intuition is rarely wrong.
- It’s never too late to take the first step toward your aspirations.
- What you pay attention to will thrive.
I have this list taped on my bathroom mirror and I read through it every morning. If it speaks to you like it speaks to me, watch out–you may find your life slowly changing too.
2. Oranges
As part of my commitment to “whole living” I’m challenging myself to eat more nutritiously…which has led to me eating an orange for the very first time in my life.
Um…amazing!
Why didn’t anyone tell me these things were so good?! Since eating my first orange I’ve eaten one nearly every day this month. YUM!
3. Firefox
I usually use Internet Explorer for surfing the web, but I tried Firefox for the first time this month after having trouble viewing a website in IE, and now I’m a convert.
Did you know Firefox has spell check?!
It’s automatic–just like with Microsoft Word! You can type anything anywhere–your email, Blogger, online message boards, etc–and if you misspell a word Firefox will automatically underline it with a red squiggly line, and when you right-click on it, it offers corrections. I’ve discovered other things I love about Firefox (like App Tabs) but spell check is the best!
4. Spin Pins
I’ve been meaning to post about these brilliant little suckers for a while now. They’re basically two little spiral pins that replace the 1,568 bobby pins previously needed to hold my up-do in place. You just twist them into your hair, and they keep things put. The other day I styled my hair in a messy bun using 2 two spin pins (and only 3 additional bobby pins to tame some strays) and not only did my up-do stay in place all day—it also survived my 5-mile run after work!
5. This YouTube Video (Warning: explicit lyrics)
My friend Beth sent me the link to this video, and it is so awesome I had to share. It’s a student who performed Cee Lo Green’s song “Fuck You” (the radio version is “Forget You”) in sign language for her final project. Love it!
About time you hop on the FireFox bandwagon! It’s the best!
I too subscribe to Whole Living and really enjoy it.
I’ve been really curious about those spin things…but I don’t understand how to use it.
Thanks for the link to the Sign Language performance – hilarious! I’ve watched it a half dozen times already!!
Love the list from whole living. I borrowed it from you and posted it on my blog too!
I was just raving about the spin pins to the girls the other day! I LOVE them! I was skeptical for $6 but totally worth it!
That video is awesome!
They make mini spin pins too-great for my little ballerina
I think you’ve convinced me to buy the Spin Pins! I look at them EVERY time I’m in Target, Walgreens, Ulta, etc….and talk myself out of it, thinking “there’s no way this can possibly work.” Um…5 mile run? Hell to the yes, I WILL be trying those babies out (the spin pins–not the 5 miler–let’s not get crazy here). As for Firefox, I’m a convert. It’s my browser of choice and I don’t think I’ll ever go back.
OMG………….love the video! I use firefox and IE alternately all the time. Glad the spin pins work for you. I have short hair so I will take your word for it.
I am a HUGE firefox fan! I don’t know why anyone would use anything else! Now if ever I’m using IE I have misspelled words all over the place because I’m used to the red line!
I’m totally checking out wholeliving.com. That sounds AWESOME!!! Thanks for sharing!
I got spin pins last summer for a wedding, and I LUURRVVEEE them. I have super thin, fine hair, so they are one of the few things that keep my hair up!

Other than Whole Living, which I’ve never heard of, I wholeheartedly agree with this list. Spin Pins are my secret to running without my hair falling all over the place!
I am on a self-improvement quest, so the Whole Living thing is really speaking to me. Thanks for sharing it.
I have been using Google Chrome. I’ve heard people say Go Chrome or go home, which I like. And I like Chrome too. IE started doing funky things on a site we use at work, but Chrome doesn’t do those funky things.

for probably the last five years of my life i’ve LOVED firefox. still do but i don’t even use it anymore because i’m hooked on chrome. you would love it because the look of the page is soooo clean and sleek and uncluttered. very you. seriously, it took me a day or two to get used to not having all those tool bars across the top but now i’m in love!

Great list! The ten tenets of Whole Living really speak to me. I think I’ll look into it. Thanks!
I feel a little dense asking this but can you post a picture with your hair in the spin pins, or a tutorial? I have horribly fine hair and am always looking for ways to wear my hair up and have it actually stay. Thanks!
