My Twilight Saga

March 25, 2009 By Dusty Rogers 11 Comments

Remember my Twilight coma, circa 2008? I started reading the first book on the last day of a spa weekend getaway and became so engrossed in it that I was actually annoyed my facial lasted so long. You couldn’t get me out of Forks, WA any easier than you could get Edward out of Bella’s bedroom. I was in love, and I was there to stay!

I wrote several Twilight-related posts during this time, and–in honor of my upcoming blogiversary–I had a tough time deciding which one to republish. In the end I chose this one because I think it’s important to assure all my fellow vampire lovers out there that YES–there is life after Twilight. But I’m not going to lie–it’s not pretty.

Life After Twilight
Originally posted on 11/16/08

I’ve finished reading the Twilight series books and all I can say is: WOW. I cannot believe how much I loved them! As I wrote in previous posts–vampire love stories (let alone teenage vampire love stories) are not typically my type. At all. But once I started, I devoted nearly every ounce of free time I had–not to mention time I didn’t have (who needs sleep?)–to reading these books. I just finished Breaking Dawn–the last book in the series–and I begrudgingly realize it’s time to take an honest look at what happens to my life when I do nothing but read for 3 weeks.

Blogging: I’ve nose-dived from my average of 5 blog posts a week to 1. Definitely not my A game. Keeping up with other peoples’ blogs has been even more of an abysmal failure. I currently have 920 posts backed up in my Google Reader.

TV: I have 22 TV shows stored up in my TiVo that I haven’t watched yet. Three of which used to be Grey’s Anatomy (my favorite show) until G got so concerned I was slipping into a dark place that he started 2 episodes of Grey’s while I was laying on the couch reading, and–like a moth to a flame–I couldn’t resist focusing on the TV. G has since given up trying to stir me from my Twilight coma, so I still have last week’s episode–along with 21 other shows–to catch up on.

My Job: Still intact, amazingly enough. There were a few days there when I considered quitting my job so I could stay home and read all day, but I managed to make it through still employed.

Health & Fitness: I haven’t been to the gym in 2 weeks. However, the fact that preparing meals and eating also slid to the bottom of my priority list, I haven’t eaten in 2 weeks either, so it evens out.

Laundry: I’m not going to lie–it’s not pretty. Thank goodness I finished Breaking Dawn this morning so I can get some laundry done before the work week starts. If G had asked me tomorrow if brown dress pants, a grey and white striped shirt, and red socks matched, I would have answered yes–because those are the only clean clothes he has left.

Friends & Family: Those who I’ve actually seen (plans I committed to before starting Twilight, of course) aren’t sure they know me anymore. I can see how the vampire obsession could throw them off a bit…

Personal Hygiene: Sometimes I brushed my teeth.

Chase: This poor pooch was so neglected by my Twilight obsession that she started whining as soon as I cracked the book. She is lucky to have such an attentive dad, because I have failed miserably as a mother.

My Marriage: G is about 5 minutes away from joining Match.com.

In the end–the Twilight books were incredible. And although I’ve neglected nearly everything in my life while pouring over them, I’ve still gotta say it was worth it. I’m pretty sure my friends, family, Chase, and my house will forgive me. I’m not so sure about G yet, but I’ve got a back-up plan–I don’t think he’ll get too far on his dates with mismatched clothes.

Ooh! And I’ve still got the movie to look forward to–EEeee!!

You are too funny. I was the same way when I read the books. I finally gave in this January and decided to see what all the fuss was about. 6 days later I put breaking dawn down and the second I did Roni (my finace) asked if I was done and I said yes and the only response I got from him was GOOD. haha The books made me feel like a teenager all over again. I had mixed emotions once I finished the series; happy that I finished the story but on the hand sad that I finished the story.

I finally jumped on the bandwagon with the Twilight saga. I am on the third book now & just watched the movie this past weekend. I was terribly disappointed in the movie. Am I the only one?
I do LOVE the books though!!

I just wrote about this on my blog too. I’m re-reading the series again for the second time (since October), and I’m back in the “Twilight frame of mind”. I think it’s almost better this time around because I’m picking up on things I missed last time.

    Ugh – I love those damn Cullen’s :)

@Mrs JL–well if you loved the movie then the books will BLOW YOU AWAY!! Seriously, you will not be disappointed!

@Savannah–you’re not alone, girl! I didn’t like the Twilight movie either. =( You can check out my post on it (titled: The Twilight Movie–link to it at the end of this post) if you’re interested and looking for someone to commiserate with you!

@Windy City Kelley’s–I completely agree with you!! As much as I loved reading the books the first time, I really do think they’re almost better the second time around. You pick up on more, you don’t have quite the sense of urgency to find out what will happen next, and you can appreciate the story more. I’m gearing up for my third re-reading of the series myself!

OMG. So I’m incredibly late on the whole Twilight saga, but I picked up the first book last week, and I’m already on Eclipse. I’m not a reader either. I rented the movie and watched it… 3 times in 24 hours. I’m so obsessed. Everything you wrote in this post describes how I’m feeling.

I feel in a constant daze. When I’m not reading, I’m thinking about the book. When I’m sleeping, I’m dreaming about it. So weird.

Good to know that there is life after Twilight because I was starting to doubt it. haha

I am going to have to read these books. I have to say my 10 year old talked me into renting the movie and I was not impressed. However I know from experience that reading the book is much better than watching the movie. Anyway…. Have you ever read Charlaine Harris’ series called True Blood.??/ The sookie stackhouse series… It is basically the adult version of a vampire tale… HBO also has a series out on this and it is amazing… Sometime in the Summer or Fall a new series of shows will start. Have a great weekend. jaime

I have the read the first two books and just watched the movie on Monday – it is such an addiction. I wasn’t sure if I would like the movie after reading the book but for the most part I did. I can’t wait to read the next book!

P.S. I really enjoy your blog, I liked the post on bangs!

I had to read them all after the hoopla in the blog world, so glad that my book sharing bff gave me them. Like everyone else I was hooked. I haven’t seen the movie and probably won’t (I don’t want to be disappointed).
My question is, am I the only one in the world that wanted Bella to be with Jacob? Don’t get me wrong I loved how book 4 wrapped it up, it totally made sense. But, I still love Jacob!

    1st off LOVE the bangs!!!

OMG I am totally with you on Twilight… everything in my life has taken the backseat to these books, I am about to start book 4. I feel so bad I feel like I have met an actual boy and I am having an affair on my husband. I have to keep reminding myself that Edward is not real!!!

Haha, this is a great post. I too feel of the face of the earth as soon as I picked up the first book. I was like, I dunno, vampires? But holy cow I couldn’t stop reading them, and when I wasn’t reading I was thinking about reading! So fun to hear about someone else enjoying them too.
