Goal Achieved!

I'm so excited to say that on Saturday, September 12th--at nearly 24 weeks pregnant--I reached my New Year's Resolution goal of running 400 miles this year!

This New Year's Resolution started off like most--I was highly motivated and did great for the first 6 weeks or so...and then I started slacking off. In April my friend Jill talked me into running an 8K race so that got me back in my running shoes for a few weeks, but then on April 28th I found out I was pregnant.

Decision time.

I could either re-commit to my goal and DO IT. Or I could make excuses and always wonder if I had it in me. (And believe me, pregnancy seemed like a damn good excuse.)

I decided to go for it. I didn't know if I'd be able to make my goal, but I was determined to try. I made adjustments for running while pregnant, and started getting up early to run before work since I was so tired in the afternoons and evenings. Soon I was running every morning and before long my mileage went from 10 miles/week to 15 miles/week to 20 miles/week, as I gradually counted my way up to 400!

Me and the baby, right after our 400th mile:

I'm so proud that I hit my goal only 9 months into the year. I'm also proud that almost all of my miles were ran outside, and almost all were ran while pregnant. But most of all I'm proudest that I'll never have to look back and wonder if I had it in me--that's the greatest achievement.

You totally motivated me to start getting up early and run before work. Keep it going lady! That is something to be very, very proud of!

Thank you all SO MUCH! Your comments are all so wonderful and really mean a lot to me; thank you!

I do plan to keep running even though I've hit my goal for the year, although I'm not sure how much longer I'll be able to last. The baby is definitely making herself known!

congrats!! can i ask, what kind of running shoes do you wear? do you like them? any advice on buying running shoes? thanks!

Kalee September 15, 2009 11:47 PM

This is so inspiring! I keep wanting to get back into running, because it always helped me relax and de-stress, but with an international move and then a drive through 7 state move I made excuses ---too tired, too much to do. But seeing you accomplish this makes me want to set a similar goal.

And can I just say you look fantastic, even being pregnant and just having gone running!

G+D September 16, 2009 9:02 AM

Thanks so much everyone! Your comments about being inspired by my running are so amazing--thank you! I've been inspired by so many other runners, and I'm happy to pay it forward. Good luck to all of you!

@Allie--I wear Mizuno Wave Creation running shoes. My best advice for buying running shoes is to go to a specialty store and getting fitted for them. I finally did this for the first time about 3 years ago and OMG, it makes such a difference! They measure your foot and determine which kind of support you need, then have you try some on and watch as you run in them (either outside or on a treadmill) to see how your foot is hitting the ground and how the shoe seems to work. The result is the perfect shoe for YOUR feet and YOUR running style. Prior to getting fitted I used to have soreness in my feet and legs, but I found out it was b/c I had been buying the wrong kind of shoe (and the wrong size!), but not anymore. I'll never buy a pair of running shoes any other way again!
