Embrace the Camera

After writing my recent "day in my life" post for The Domestic Wannabe, I decided to check out the other moms' posts on her blog to compare notes and make sure I wasn't screwing things up too badly with Kate--and that's how I was introduced to Emily and her "Embrace the Camera" challenge. The concept is a sweet and simple one:

Take pictures of yourself with your children.

Emily's point is that as moms, we're typically behind the camera instead of in front of it. Think about it--how many photos do you have of you and your mom when you were little? I have tons of baby photos but I can only think of one picture that also has my mom in it. One!

I want more than that for Kate.

You may not like the way you look today, you may not be particularly enthralled with what you're wearing, or how your hair looks--but you know what? Your children don't care. And when they're all grown up, you're both going to cherish those photos together.

So here we are--me and my daughter, embracing the camera!

Agreed! I need to feel more comfortable in asking my husband to "hey, can you take a picture of me and the baby?" It just feels weird to ask someone to weild the camera and snap away!

I've been doing this with both my kids since they were babies. I just hold the camera out and shoot. I now have tons of pictures of us together and I hope they cherish them someday! At first I felt totally vain doing it but now I don't care. :-)

What a beautiful picture. Certainly one you'll both cherish as she grows :)

Oh what a GREAT idea!! Totally doing that... thank you! And you guys are soooo cute!

Hey hair is so sparse! Reminds me of a little peach with fuzz on it! So cute. And do I detect a bit of red?

Kim @ Don't Kid Yourself August 18, 2010 12:26 PM

That is a great idea. We just took our son the the lake for his first trip, and when looking over the 40 pictures I took that day I realized I was not in a single shot!

I think that is a great idea! My son is 8 months and I was organizing pictures the other day and thought how I don't have many pictures of him and I, lots of him with daddy, but not me!

Aw that picture is so sweet! Thanks for passing along the idea - I will def remember that when our LO shows up!

Love the picture! Looking back, I realize that I have very few pictures with my son too :( I am definitely going to start taking more of us together! Thank you!

That is so true and your photo came out adorable!!!

Michelle August 18, 2010 3:00 PM

Oh, what a precious picture! Also, has anyone ever told you you look just like Rachel Leigh Cook?

Lori August 19, 2010 7:32 AM

Beautiful~ both of you!

As a mother of a 4.5 yr old and a 2 yr old I can say that you are absolutley correct. Your kids will always (except maybe in their teen years) think you are the most beautiful Mommy on the planet! :)

It's so true! I have a million with my father, but not many with my mother!

I've been meaning to ask, is Kate her full name? Or is it Kathrine or Kathleen or something else? Where did you come up with the name Kate? Is she named after someone or did you just love the name?

Too cute, you and your girl:) And so right on! I barely have any photos of me and my baby, but at his last photo shoot I jumped in so that we could get one together. Now I just need to start taking them at home.

I love this idea. I am always so judgy of myself on film and should probably just get over it. You look so happy and healthy. And my goodness, Kate is her daddy's girl. She looks like your husband.

So true! While on our family vacation I had to ask my husband to take pictures because I am the photographer. I am in about 3 pictures taken by him and I took one myself with my daughter. Thank you for the reminder that I should ask for more pictures with my kids!

Hi G&D! You make a great point, I think that our children will appreciate the photos with us in them. I have so many photos of my little girls but very few of me with them. I will start a new photo session! Thanks for sharing, and your little baby is ADORABLE, lover her big blue eyes, all the best to your family!

This is a good reminder - I only have about a month until I'm officially a mommy!

I love this post! And I love you! I am ALWAYS the one taking pics--so most of them are of R and S. Thank you for posting this!

D ~

LOVE this recommendation. When my hubby and I took our baby girl on a walk tonight, I made him snap a pic of me with her. I need to remember to do this more often!

Love this. You are stunning; you are even MORE stunning when you're with Kate.

Stephanie September 11, 2010 9:22 PM

Hi D! I would love to see an update of Kate's nursery and how well things have worked out for you functionally. Love the pic!
