Stocking Up

September 24, 2009 By Dusty Rogers 33 Comments

I’ve been reading that it’s important to start stocking up now on the essentials you’ll need a lot of once the baby comes.

Well, who am I to ignore good advice?

Starting now, every time I go to the store I plan on buying one package of diapers–and one bottle of wine.

    ahhh wine!!!!!

I can almost taste it now :)

On my breast feeding class at the hospitals they said you can have a 4 oz glass of wine. This is coming from the experts so I’m also not going to be the one that disagrees with good advice!

4 more weeks for me and I can be reunited with my good ol’ friend!

I wouldn’t recommend buying diapers at all (or too many of them if you insist) for 3 reasons:
    1. Babies esp. newborns outgrow them really fast. One week the wear size 0, next thing you know they are at 1.
    2. You don’t know if the baby is going to be allergic to a certain brand (that happenned to my son)
    3. Consider cloth diappering. You’ll find tons of info in the web and it’s better for the baby, your wallet and poor old earth.

Yum! Mommy needs some pampering too! It was a running joke when I was pregnant that packing a bottle of wine in the hospital bag was essential.

Just speaking from experience, I wouldn’t buy too many diapers. Diapers fit babies differently. I bought a package of one brand and had to switch to another because my son kept have poop explosions. Both of my kids outgrew the newborn ones fast.

I tried a great red wine the other day. It’s called Liberty School Cabernet Sauvignon. I’m just getting into red wine but I thought it was yummy. I would buy it again!

I also blogged about another wine (white) that I recently enjoyed…

This is a sweeter wine a friend brought over that I enjoyed too…

    Take care!

DreamCatcher is right. Don’t buy too many of one size diapers, because they outgrow them fast. Don’t worry about the wine. You’ll never outgrow that.

I see I’m a little behind the ball on this advice, but I honestly wouldn’t have more than 2-3 packages of each diaper size on hand, and keep your receipts. These little ones have unpredictable growth spurts. Furthermore, you may end up hating a particular brand. (Don’t EVEN get me started on Huggies… heehee!)

Throw a “diaper party” for the boys. just provide food and beer and to get in the boys must each bring a pack of diapers!! we were set on diapers for a while after our little one.

2 pillows to tape to the baby. One to the front and one to the back in case of accidents.

I agree with Kelsey- don’t even get me started on Huggies. I hate them. But, I generally am not prejudice to a bottle of wine, so on that note, go all out! :)

Do you have a Costco membership? If not, it’s worth the $15 annual fee to just buy diapers in bulk at Costco. I’ve found that I spend less than half of what I would spend at a normal grocery store/Target/Walmart/whatever by buying them in bulk at Costco.

Burp cloths! Never think you have enough burp cloths! Infants are gassy, spitty little creatures.

I’ve had so enjoyed “coming along” with you on your baby adventure. Your blog is such a fun place. Two thumbs up, Mama!

I got a ton of diapers as gifts at my showers. I would hold off like everyone else. Stock up on the real essentials. Like wine. That won’t be something that you might have to return.

Funny! We used pampers for our first baby and they were fine, but then my husband brought home some Huggies for this baby…and I acutally have liked them better. And I know everyone is saying Don’t buy too many of the N size (newborn)…but our baby is 5 weeks has only JUST started to outgrow them. Buy lots…otherwise you’re making a diaper run every other day, seriously…but DO keep the receipts if you do end up having to exchange for 1s.

Also, do buy lots of wine. Otherwise you’re just running out for more every other day, ha ha. You won’t need to keep the receipts for it though. : )

Yet another mom to say that I would hold off on buying diapers in advance b/c you never know when they are going to outgrown the size and you will find different brands work for different babies. I would also say that the same goes for clothes too!!

I would suggest instead that you could just put money on a gift card each time in the amount of a pack of diapers so you dont have to worry about size/brand issues. However, I STRONGLY recommend if you are going to go w/ disposables that buying at Costco/Sam’s is going to be the cheapest you’ll find and they are made by a name brand just sold under the private label.

No reason to not stock up on wine but I do know that a beer is supposed to help your milk so you might sneak some of those too if you plan to breastfeed.

Baby Bargains is a great resource if you haven’t checked it out yet!

People told me the same thing about not buying diapers ahead of time, but I did, and I am really glad I did. You can always return diapers if they are un-opened. The other advice I always heard was instead of buying diapers, buying a gift card and adding like $20 bucks to it everytime you’re at the store (instead of buying the pack of diapers). That way you have a gift card full of money (for diapers_, but you don’t have to worry about your child being allergic, outgrowing, etc. Okay, I’ll shutup now. :)

Someone gave me the following advice about diapers when I was pregnant and mentioned wanting to stock up: Everytime you go to the grocery store, instead of buying a pack of diapers, get a gift card that you can continually add to and put the price of that pack of diapers on the gift card. Keep adding to the gift card on each of your shopping trips, then, once the baby is born and you figure out which diaper works best, you have a ton of $$ on the gift card to spend on diapers!

I was able to save quite a bit throughout my pregnancy and ended up having money on that gift card until my son was 7 months old. It was wonderful!

Remember to buy lots of wipes also! (you should be safe with the sensitive ones). Also, you can combine Target and manufacturers coupons, so when Target has Huggies diapers for 8.99, I pay $4.49. Originally I thought I would go the cloth diaper route. Good thing I did…those 36 prefolds worked well as burp cloths:)

I’m going with wipes for sure~~then (since you admit you are not a cooking goddess-you peobably won’t be making your own baby food)baby food! Lot’s of fruits, they are always a hit with the baby and the shelf life is like 2 years or something crazy! Before you know it the little girl will be eating 2 or more jars at a sitting, and at almost a buck a jar~~it add’s up fast. And let’s face it~~if your daughter does grow out of them too quickly, you have 2 other sisters that are having babies within a few months of yours, you can give away the open and exchange the closed packages. If you can do it now~~go for it cuz that is not want you will want to spend your time doing when you are on maternity leave!

Not sure who said costco membership is only $15 – but that’s not true! I think a full membership without any discount from work, etc. is $45 or $50

Thanks for all your advice and feedback everyone–you’ve certainly given me some good stuff to think about!

@Andreina–Only 4 more weeks? Wow, time really flies, doesn’t it? Hope these last few weeks go well for you!

@Simone–I think I’m going to skip the Emmy fashion post this year. Sorry! It was such a busy week for me last week that I didn’t have time to pull anything together. And I really wasn’t that impressed with anyone, and now that’s its been more than a week later, I think I’ll have to let this one pass. I’ll try to be more on the ball with upcoming shows though!
