5 Things I’ve Learned About Bangs

March 24, 2009 By Dusty Rogers 22 Comments

  1. After getting bangs for the first time in decades, your friends will tell you they think you look hip and trendy. You–on the other hand–will go back and forth between thinking you look like a 6 year old child, or thinking you belong in the witness protection program. Try to believe your friends.
(Side note: Mascara and eyeliner go a long way toward looking more Katie Holmes, less Suri Cruise.)
  2. After showering, comb your bangs down right away and let them air dry that way. Trust me–this is much easier than combing all your hair back, blow drying, and then trying to style your bangs straight down later. So simple really, but it took me a month to figure out how to style these damn things.
  3. Okay, this next one is very important: Just because you think the top 1/3 of your face is hidden does not mean people can’t tell when you raise your eyebrows in disgust. Same holds true for eye rolls.
  4. When your bangs get so long they become a driving hazard, it’s okay to trim them yourself–just make sure you haven’t been drinking. In fact, let’s just make that a rule right now–no using sharp instruments after a cocktail or two. At all.

    Unless it’s a corkscrew.

  5. The best thing about bangs? They’re much cheaper than Botox for hiding those forehead wrinkles!

So those are my lessons learned and pearls of wisdom on having bangs over the past two months. Got any of your own to share?

Your hairstyle is gorgeous. It almost makes me want to get bangs. Almost. I just can’t do it. With my freckles, I definitely get the look of a 9-year old…neither Kate or Suri! ; )

I do like your bangs, you do very well at pulling them off and looking like an adult! When I cut bangs the first semester I was in college, my younger brother told me I looked like I was in kindergarten. I also learned/forgot that I had an ugly cowlick. And that bangs are high maintenance. After that, no more bangs for me!

Speaking of bangs — I am growing out my pixie cut and have sort of a sweep bang thing going on now — So yesterday some lady here at work says to me, “What’s going on with those bangs?” Um, excuse me? Aren’t you supposed to keep your hair comments to yourself? As if I didn’t feel self-conscious enough about this awkward length…..

Love your lessons, and your bangs are so cute. In my own experience I have found one rule: if you have a very small forehead, skip the bangs altogether. No more bangs for me and my tiny forehead.

The bangs are cute. I’m not brave enough to try them though for fear that I won’t be able to style them.

Gorgeousss, dahling! And those eyes! Meeoww!

Bangs are totally the new Botox.

(A corkscrew’s about the only tool I can master anyway.)

I heart your bangs. Why are they called bangs, though? What a funny name. I have them too. Mine sweep from a side part, so they aren’t quite as sexy as yours.

    Excellent rules, by the way.

I cut some bangs myself, they are fine I guess. When I read your #1 I was agreeing, I feel like a kid, but everyone else says they like them. I have been pinning them back with a bobby pin, because I cant decide. I love yours, and I will give mine another shot. Thanks

Here’s a question: How do you avoid the horrible feathered-bangs-from-the-80s situation when it’s a windy day?

    Thanks everyone!

@kirwin–I have freckles too, although you don’t typically see mine unless I’m out in the sun. And since the sun hasn’t been out since getting bangs I haven’t ran into this problem yet, but thanks for the heads-up! I’ll be sure to wear extra eyeliner that day!

@Staci–I totally agree. That hooker should have kept her bang-hating hair comment to herself. Grr! Growing out a style is the worst. Good luck to you!

@Emily–good rule to add, although I thought your bangs looked adorable!

@Stephanie and April–if you decide to change your mind, I’m telling you–#2 is the key to styling them straight down. I have a cowlick too, but you’d never know it now! (My cowlick is above my right eye–and where I always parted my hair before I got bangs.) When my bangs are wet and I comb them straight down they totally stay that way. No additional syling needed!

@jbhat–Good question–I have no clue, lol! Off to Google…

@Candance–I did the bobby pinning a lot more when I first got them cut (and still do whenever I work out–I can’t stand sweaty bangs on my forehead!) but try them straight down for awhile–it’s takes some getting used to, but I bet you’ll adjust before too long. Good luck!

@Erin–Hmmm…good question. Well for starters I’m not outside much. Prevention is key. And I guess if I did have plans to spend the day outside in the wind–like on a cruise, or driving in a convertible w/the top down on a sunny day…in Hawaii, or sailing with Leonardo DiCaprio in a vintage 1920s corset and gown (hey–if I’m spending the day in the wind, it better be worth my while!) then I guess I’d probably just pin my bangs back so I’m not mistaken for a Charlie’s Angel.

Love the bangs! I get bangs every couple of years to change up my hair and there is always a learning curve to remember how to style them.

It took me a long time to learn with my side-swept bangs that I need to dry them in the opposite direction, and then they will fall correctly on my face. Otherwise they are a tad out of control and I look like a 5 year old!
