1. I’m fully aware that bagels are The Devil. I’ve read the articles that ask, “Which is worse? A bagel…or this hamburger as big as your head, topped with cheese, bacon, and an extra slab of lard?” and I gently pull the wool back over my eyes while glimpsing the answer:
The bagel.
Yes, fine, whatever, I get it. Bagels are a bad choice–but sometimes my body needs a bagel, dammit! This was true one recent morning as I pulled into Einstein Bros Bagels on my way to work and discovered their “Bagel Thin” sandwiches. I ordered the Bagel Thin Eggwhite Bacon & Cheese Panini which cost me a couple of bucks and 400 calories. I’ll admit it’s not the healthiest breakfast a girl could have, but when we’re talking about cheese, real bacon, pepper cream cheese shmear (did I mention the yummy shmear?), and a bagel…400 calories is pretty darn good. And that’s the thing–it was good. Super delicious, and just the thing my hangover morning needed!
2. I’m a little bit obsessed with my cuticles. I push them back from my fingernails on a near daily basis. I typically use an orange stick (or my own fingernails in a pinch) but not anymore! I recently impulse purchased this e.l.f. Nourishing Cuticle Pen for only $1.00 at Target. One dollar! The thing I love about this cuticle pen (in addition to its price) is that the tip is the perfect shape, size, and firmness. It allows me to easily and comfortably push my cuticles back. And if that weren’t fantastic enough, the pen is loaded with moisturizers that condition my nails, plus it dries quickly so I can start polishing right away. Now that’s one dollar that packs a (nicely manicured) punch!
3. The Eureka Enviro Hard-Surface Floor Steamer.
Believe it or not, this is actually what I asked for for Christmas. Sexy, right? Over half of the main level of our house has hardwood floors…which are perpetually dirty. Ever since Kate’s been mobile I cringe thinking about the kind of grime and germs she’s picking up while crawling across our floors. We used to use Swiffer Wet Wipes to clean our hardwoods but I was interested in using something that was more environmentally friendly, and that did a better job of lifting dirt without your arm falling off. After comparing reviews on Amazon, the Eureka Enviro Steamer seemed like our best choice. The thing I love most about this steam mop is that it uses only water to clean the floors–no chemicals! It also heats up to a high enough temperature while cleaning that not only does it easily lift stuck-on grime, it also sanitizes the floor–music to this germaphobe mama’s ears!
Oh wait, now that I think about it my favorite thing about this mop is that I’ve actually never had to use it–G does the floors.
It’s the gift that keeps on giving.
4. How have I gone over 30 years on this Earth and never had Nutella?
G and I vacationed in Mexico in mid-January and that’s where Nutella and I met. I was grabbing a hangover bagel (yes, I know, the devil) at the continental breakfast before I realized there was no cream cheese option. My choices were butter, jelly, or Nutella. I’ve heard of Nutella before but I always thought it was that yucky spread that Aussies go nuts over (I now realize that’s vegemite–so close!), but this stuff looked like chocolate peanut butter so I decided to give it a try. Turns out it pretty much is chocolate peanut butter! It was incredibly delicious and I ended up putting so much damn Nutella on that bagel that there’s no way it was only 400 calories. The next morning for breakfast I had crepes filled with Nutella and cream cheese and topped with caramel. We’re not even going to guess at the calorie count for that one.
5. The Help by Kathryn Stockett.
My sister-in-law Lesley loaned me this book, which I loved. The story is set in Mississippi during the beginning of the Civil Rights Movement and follows the lives of three women (two black maids and one white aspiring writer) surrounded by racism and segregation, who one day dare to wonder, “What if things were different?” I’d tell you more but I know I won’t do the book justice (check out the Amazon reviews for more eloquent descriptions than I’m able to give). If you’re looking for a good read this book won’t let you down!

I love the e.l.f cuticle pen too! I keep it in my desk at work and use it daily while on long boring calls!
Great list!
Ah Nutella, food of the gods.
Nutella Ravioli is pretty good 😀
Really??? never tried Nutella!!?? My hubby and I argue about the best way to eat it…but I am obviously right…on a spoon! =)
thank God you tried Nutella. Life is definitely not complete without it.
nutella on a slice of toast is my breakfast nearly everyday!
Now I have the sudden urge to go buy Nutella. We can’t keep it stocked in the pantry because I like to eat it with a spoon…or my finger!
I also loved The Help! I can’t wait to see the movie.

I bought The Help to bring to the hospital when I had my baby last year, in anticipation of ALL THE FREE TIME I thought I’d have while being induced and between baby feedings. Heh. I’m over this kind of delusion but I still haven’t had time to read it. You’ve inspired me to dig it out!
@Erin–Oh my gosh, I had no idea The Help was being made into a movie! I told G as I was reading it, “I could totally see this being a movie.” That’s awesome!
Emma Stone as Skeeter?? YES! I love Emma Stone!!
Mmmm… Einstein Brothers is delish!
I just discovered Nutella about a year ago and I love it!
Thanks for sharing that cuticle pen, I’ll have to check that out~!
Nutella & fresh strawberries in a crepe or Nutella & peanut butter French toast. Sinful but soooo delicious!
I have The Help in my list of books to read. And now you have me looking at that darn steam mop. Mopping is my least favorite so I just never do it. But maybe if I had a mechanical appliance then I’d do it more.
chocolate hazelnut butter, actually.
I did not need to read about that bagel. I just tried the Au Bon Pain Skinny bagel at 380 calories and it doesn’t look nearly as good as this one from Einstein!
I’ll need to investigate that sweeper…I was just thinking about all the dirt that has to be lurky on our kitchen floor…of course was thinking about it while I was sitting on the floor with our 5 month old. Eww.
Funny about the bagel. I have never really been a bagel eater, but the other morning one just sounded good. So I checked the internet, the Infallible Source of Right and True Information that it is, and it said that a bagel was GOOD for me! So now I have had one every day this week. Hmmm…and now your internet post is telling me otherwise. What to do?!

Oh my goodness, I LOVED The Help. I listened to it while training for a marathon and was so upset when I finished. I haven’t found a book I loved as much since.
Ah, not a commenter but I couldn’t resist when I wasn’t reading more praise from others about THE HELP. This book is a must read- i could have easily read it in a day but started it during the work week and couldn’t wait for my lunch break and evening to finish it.
Easily in my top 5 favorites!
I am really, really liking that steam cleaner. Thanks for sharing!
Nutella is amazing. You reminded me that it really is time to treat myself to another jar of it again…
This is kind of an odd question, but which Target did you find the elf products in? I keep looking for them at a couple of the Targets around Madison (the west side one on Mineral Point and the Fitchburg Super Target) and they don’t seem to have a place for them in the aisles. I like elf and I’d love to find a local source!
Thanks for your comments everyone!
@jbhat–Uh-oh, I hate to be The Contradictor of the Infallible Source of Right and True Information, but if my memory is correct I believe it had something to do with bagels having a high GI score (GI? Is that right?) which means they spike your blood sugar (it’s possible I’m making this up) and get your appetite/metabolism/tolerance for co-workers(something like that) all whacked out, and you’re pretty much screwed for the day. You can quote me on this.
@Kate–I got the cuticle pen at the Super Target in Fitchburg (that’s where I get all my Target stuff). I can look next time I’m there, but I found it either in the nail polish section, or elf had its own little section in the cosmetics area. I’m pretty sure it was by the nail polish though. Hope that helps!
No WONDER I had such a sh*tty week!!

Love this list! I’m also a recent discoverer of Nutella and I’m OBSESSED! I put it in and on everything! Cupcakes, cookies, molten lava cakes…the list goes on. I’m also reading “The Help”! I’m from Greenwood, MS and this book provides such a painfully accurate depiction of my home state’s past. The story, however, is phenomenal. Glad you’re enjoying it also!
Nutella on waffles, then let some fresh butter melt on top. You can put some banana slices to assuage the guilt, but why ruin the party eh?
