I have eyebrow issues.
It all began a year ago when I was making impromptu decisions around mall kiosks and got my eyebrows threaded. It was my first time getting my eyebrows shaped and it was a total shock to see my previously ungroomed eyebrows over-threaded down to teeny parentheses over my eyes.
The other shock?
I have a large chickenpox scar on my left eyebrow and hair does not grow there. The rookie at the kiosk threaded the five whole hairs I have growing in that region, leaving me with a left eyebrow that started waaaaay too far to the left.
My search for the perfect eyebrow filler had begun.
I tried shadow filler since my brows are so light, but when you’re trying to fill over a spot where there is literally no hair, there’s nothing for the shadow to stick to. (It’s not a good look.) I’ve been trying a variety of pencils over the past year but they’re either too dark, too light, too harsh, wipe off at the slightest touch, or discontinued by the manufacturer shortly after I decide they might work for me.
My latest find – the Waterproof Retractable Brow Pencil from Sephora – is none of those and definitely my favorite find so far:
If you have thin or light eyebrows, a brow scar, or are face-toucher prone to accidentally wiping your eyebrows off, this little guy is worth spending the extra money on.
2. Maybelline’s Dream Lumi Highlighting Pen:
Sleep is one option for getting rid of dark under-eyes. This pen is the other. Twist the bottom (hear it click, click, click) and then brush it on where you need it and blend. I like to use it to make a little triangle under each of my eyes to brighten them up. The makeup is really lightweight which I love, and makes me look more awake than I typically am these days, which I love even more!
3. Dry Shampoo
In addition to highlighting my under-eye area with the Lumi pen, my other secret weapon for passing as more human than zombie these days is dry shampoo. Since I’ve started using it I get to sleep in a little bit longer and my hair often looks better because of it. Shake the can like it’s your money-maker and lightly spray it at your roots. Let it soak in for a minute or two, brush or shake your fingers through it and you’re ready to go. This stuff makes showers optional! (Deodorant, however, is not.)
4. Okay, so say you DO shower. Now you’ve got a head full of wet hair. Wet, tangly hair.
I once offered G $1,000 to comb my hair for me when I got out of the shower – that’s how much I hate combing my hair when it’s long and wet. It’s a major ordeal that should come with commercials and outfit changes, and when I’m finally through, my wide-tooth comb is filled with enough auburn strands to adorn an army full of Barbie sidekicks. It’s time consuming, it’s gross, and I hate it…so when my hair stylist recommended the Wet Brush I was all over it.
Now I know what you’re probably thinking – there’s no way in hell I’m getting all those bristles near my wet head. That’s exactly what I thought too when my stylist started using it on me, but much to my surprise it really works! When you’re used to a hard, wide-toothed comb, a flexible bristle brush feels pretty strange at first, but it gets the job done so much quicker and easier. Detangling my wet head is now done in a fraction of the time it used to take, and (I’ve haven’t done an official count, but it seems like) I lose a lot less hair per brushing. This brush can of course also be used on dry hair and it’s now a favorite of Kate’s, too! Those nasty tangles disappear in just a brush or two, with very little pulling or “ouch”es from her. Mornings just got a whole lot easier!
5. I didn’t want to say anything at first, but I can’t hide it any longer: I’ve turned into a Miley Cyrus lover. Wrecking Ball is currently on repeat in my car. #thereisaidit
What are some things you’ve been loving lately?

I might have to try this brow pencil! I bought a Wet Brush recently..its a game changer.
Totally agree. Let me know what you think of the brow pencil if you give it a try!
LOL! This literally made me ‘laugh out loud’, maybe because I can relate to no sleep thanks to a newborn and toddler. Under eye circles? Check. Dirty, unwashed hair? Check. 😉
I don’t know how anyone does it with more than one kid – huge kudos to you, Carla!
I have super thick curly hair so I hear ya on the whole brushing thing. Have you ever tried brushing while in the shower? I started doing this college and there’s been no going back!
I have tried that, Jess, but I haven’t been doing it consistently. I’ll have to get back to it – thanks for the reminder!
The eyebrows, the hair thing, the dry shampoo. This info is gold for me. Thanks!
