2009 Golden Globes Fashion

January 15, 2009 By Dusty Rogers 21 Comments

Things have been busy this week, so I’m a little behind in catching up with my news and world events. Of course by “news” I mean E! News. And by “world events” I mean the Golden Globes. Now that I’m up to speed, I’ve found I have issues with some of the “fashion police” feedback I’ve been hearing–so now it’s my turn to sound off.

Maybe my tastes have gone goth since slipping into my Twilight coma, but I thought this Carolina Herrera look Renee Zellweger sported looked absolutely gorgeous! Poor Renee has been raked across the coals for this fashion choice, but I really liked it.

(Now her sour facial poses on the other hand? Thumbs down.)

Eva Mendes’s gown got mixed reviews, but I thought it was beautiful!

Another fashion “don’t” according to E!’s fashion police–Anne Hathaway. I have to disagree. I love this dark navy blue against her gorgeous pale skin. Or maybe I just love seeing a pale celebrity? This could be, considering I’m sporting some very pasty “winter white” skin at the moment–which just so happens to stay with me all year round. I love that she embraces her paleness. I’m hoping this trend starts sweeping the nation and I can put away the sunless tanning lotion for good! Psst–pale is the new tan. Pass it on.

This look got 2 thumbs up from seemingly everyone–except me. Now I love me some Drew–don’t get me wrong! And her dress is absolutely beautiful and looks stunning on her. But the hair is just way too much hair for me. It looks like she walked off the scene of her Never Been Kissed movie, threw on a dress, and walked the red carpet.

See what I’m saying?

Okay, now here are a few of my favorite looks from the Golden Globes the critics and I both seem to agree on.

Eva Longoria Parker looked amazing in this red Reem Acra.

The shade of yellow of this Elie Saab gown looked beautiful on Laura Linney with her skin tone and hair color. Loved it.

And my favorite dress of the night was hands-down, without a doubt, this gorgeous white J. Mendel gown worn by the lovely Kate Beckinsale. I love this dress so much I want to marry G all over again and have it as my wedding gown. Of course no one will be allowed to hug me because I’ll be too concerned they’d squish my neckline. Nor would I be able to sit. Or eat for months beforehand. But it would all be worth it for this beauty!

So those are my favorite gowns–and one not-so-favorite hairstyle. What did you think? Since I’m late to the party I missed all the gossip from earlier this week–sound off and tell me who you thought were hits (and misses)!

I missed the Golden Globes, but I’d have to say Renee’s hair plus sour face totally take away from the dress (which is stunning!). Amen on Drew’s hair.

I loved the gown on Renee as well. However, the fact that you could see her bustier underneath bugged me. If it were black it wouldn’t have been so bad. And I LOVED Drew’s dress but the hair..OMG that hair..just ruined it for me.

I thought Renee’s gown was something very different for her and I applaud such a change. You’re spot on about Kate’s dress. She’s just too gorgeous, it isn’t fair!!!

I’m so behind too — I have 75% of a GG post ready to go but I feared it was too late. I missed the bus.

Drew annoyed the shit out of me. And she looked awful.

I hated Rene’s dress until they panned out and I saw the full shape, it won me over at that point!

Eva, Eva and JLO were all phenomenal in my book. I love me some latino ladies apparently!

My favorite dress of the night was on Rumer Willis! The color, the shape, the belt, her hair color. LOVE.

(ok so thats basically my blog post I never posted!)

Oh and amen to pale skin. I’m rocking it. Twilight made pale “in” for me! Let’s do it!

My Globes fashion review was a little more biting but I agree that Drew’s hair from further away looked better than up close. I didn’t care for the dress color and the red purse she carried with though. I just didn’t like Renee Zelwegers dress. I think it was just a poor choice overall for her. That flesh tone panel was a poor choice.

I thought Anne Hathaway looked beautiful. Steven Cojocaru had her as his #1 Best Dressed of the night. And Eva M. made his list as well.

@Allison–OMG, I totally hear you about the Twilight = embracing pale skin, lol! I’m sold. And I agree w/you about Renee’s dress. When I just saw the top I was unsure, but when I saw her standing in full silhouette to present I loved it! Rumer Willis’s dress WAS gorgeous! I almost added hers to my post. I loved that color on her.

@Lena–OMG, he did (re: Anne)?!?! That makes me so happy!!

I’m on the pale bus too! No skin cancer for me!

I am shocked that you loved Renee’s dress though. Gag. Did you see the awful zipper up the back? What was the designer thinking? It was horrific!

I agree with all your other comments.

I think Kate Winslet was my fav of the night. Love her!

It’s like Drew was channeling Kate Winslett channeling Katherine Deneuve on the cover of vanity fair. (Did you follow that?)

By the way, my mom thought I was sick when we moved from LA to Chicago when I was 13–then my dad reminded her that she’d never seen me without a tan before. The tan has never come back.

LMAO @ “And by “world events” I mean the Golden Globes.”

My favorite by far was also Kate B.’s dress. That neckline! Ohhh the neckline!

I’m OBSESSED with a funky neckline! I liked most of the dresses except Drew Barrymore’s and Laura Linney’s.

@Erin–that’s too funny! Although sorry to hear you lost your LA tan. But yeah, living in Chicago it was only a matter of time!
