The 2009 SAG Awards

January 26, 2009 By Dusty Rogers 18 Comments

You may not have noticed yet, but I am an awards show junkie. I love them. Look forward to them every year. And cannot get enough. The Oscars are my Super Bowl–without a doubt–but to really appreciate the Super Bowl you’ve got to watch the playoff games. That’s where the Golden Globes and last night’s Screen Actors Guild Awards awards come in. Now the upcoming Grammy’s? They’re kind of like my Super Bowl half-time show–I only care about one small part (to see if Kathy Griffin takes home the iron)–but I’ll watch the entire thing to ensure I stay current on my pop culture in case someone flashes a nipple. (The smart money’s on Miley.)

So here are a few of my thoughts from last night–which are not all fashion-related this time. Because let’s face it–the actors tend to phone it in on the fashion front when it comes to the cable awards shows.

I don’t even watch 30 Rock, but I think we can all agree that as long as Tina Fey is on TV, she’s got the Best Female in a TV Comedy award in the bag. The other gals shouldn’t even bother showing up. Just stay home, drink wine, and catch up on TiVo like the rest of us. Or maybe they should show up, but not buy a dress. Or pay for a stylist. Or even comb their hair. Hey–it worked for Meryl!

Now I don’t know how this has happened, but I’ve become an Anne Hathaway lover. It just sort of crept up on me. One day she’s on my list of people whose calls I’d screen (along with telemarketers, my college alumni association, Jennifer Love Hewitt, and anything coming in at bar time), and the next day I’m joining her fan club! Okay, not really. But I am smiling when I see her. Which means I’ve come a long way. Do I think she looked particularly amazing last night? Not really. But seeing her made me smile, so she’s going in the blog.

Now this guy? Come on. What is he thinking?? I know he’s the “comeback” actor of the year and all, but he just took Anne’s place on my Do Not Answer list.

I thought Evan Rachel Wood’s dress was pretty, but I didn’t think it was blogworthy–until I saw her shoes. I love seeing boldly colored shoes that don’t match! I only wish she’d have kept her clutch a different color, too.

I thought Teri Hatcher’s Monique Lhuillier dress was really lovely–I just wish it had been on someone else. It didn’t seem very “Teri” to me.

And my favorite everything of the night–Kate Winslet. I just love this woman. Her Narciso Rodriguez gown was perfect–stunning color, stunning cut. I especially loved the shoulders. And I’m so happy she won!! Not to mention her 2 Golden Globe wins from 2 weeks ago! She seems so genuinely thrilled and honored to win that I get all emotional and teary-eyed right along with her.

STOP THE PRESS! I have one post-initial publishing addition I need to add! I just clicked on a yahoo link for the SAG Awards and found this picture of Marcia Cross. WOW! I totally missed her last night. This dress is absolutely gorgeous–I love it!

(And hmmm…it kind of reminds me of my high school Homecoming dress–maybe that’s why I love it so much?)

So who else watched with me? What did you think? Did your favorites win?

I watched and forced the hubs to watch as well. What the heck is going on with Angelina Jolie??? All of her award show dresses have had the same shape? Are there a new set of twins in there or what? Craziness!

Meryl was fantastic last night. “I didn’t even buy a dress!” Although, I don’t particularly care for her, I thought Claire Danes looked absolutely stunning.

@Heidi–I have no clue what Angelina is thinking! Girlfriend needs to mix it up a little bit here. Give us something new to look at!

Oh how I love Meryl. I really do. That woman is just the supreme goddess in my opinion. Only SHE can get away with the no dress/hair in a barrette-clipped ponytail look, and stand up there waxing poetic about her authority to declare this year’s womens’ roles the best yet. I want to be her when I grow up.

And you’re right–Claire Danes did look beautiful. I loved the red on her.

I am an award show junkie as well. Although, I somehow missed the SAGs last night (the horror!) so I’ve been trying to catch up on all the gossip and fashion today. I agree with you on Anne Hathaway and Kate Winslet – they just seem SO genuine. I cannot help but enjoy them :).

Ah yes, the classic hand-in-pants pose. Always a hit on the red carpet, especially when complemented by shiny pants. Seriously, that picture made my day.

Ugh, how did I miss this? Have my professional funk crept into my personal life? I love award shows, how did I not even realize I missed it? Let alone not even know it was on?? What is going on with me D?!?

I agree Kate Winslet looked incredible! I watched as long as DH would let me, it was a pretty decent show. Did anyone else catch Jane Krazanski’s cut about working on the Ally McBeal set, ouch!

I watched. I love what you said about the Oscars being the Superbowl and the lead up awards being the playoffs. Perfect. But I will still screen Anne H. I cannot look at her, with that huge mouth and the enormous eyes.

I am in girl crush love with Kate Winslet. She brought her Golden Globes to the SAG awards. Good for her!

I’m an award show junkie as well…
I love Tina Fey, and she looked adorable.
Eva Longoria’s dress reminded me of another one she wore, so I did some research and she wore the exact same color, with some bling at the neckline, to another award show. Way too similar! Niche niche.
Angelina Jolie needs to wear something other than a shade a gray. In an interview with E! she said she chooses her dresses based on comfort… maybe she is hiding something…
I really liked Rosario Dawson’s dress. So glam.
And I thought Christina Applegate looked amazing.

Agreed! I can’t take anyone seriously who tucks their hands in their pants for the “I’m cool” pose :)

No TV means no awards shows for me :(

But I’m thrilled that Kate Winslet won, and also LOVE her dress. Love her!

I didn’t watch so I especially appreciated your update post. I’m with you on Anne Hathaway. I’m a little behind so I just recently watched “The Devil Wears Prada” and she is absolutely adorable in it. Sign me up as a convert, too!

@Kari–oh no!! I think it’s time for an intervention!!

@Trish–yeah, I caught Jane K’s comment, but not all of it. I may have to google to get the whole dish–sounds juicy.

@N–I thought Eva’s dress looked familiar! Nice sleuthing job. One review called it the Ice Capades/Dipping Dots dress. Blech.

@the mrs.–yep, I might’ve been The Devil Wears Prada that did it for me, too. Hmmm…good point!

Hi D! You should start watching 20 rock, it is hilarious and Tina Fey is awesome in it. We have the first season on DVD if you ever want to borrow it. I agree with you about Anne Hathaway-just saw bride wars-obviously girlie but fun. Hope all is well with your basement!

I liked Teri Hatcher’s and Marcia Cross’ dresses. But on the real…you’ve got to check out 30 Rock. It is hilarous. And probably best to start from the beginning because the character development is great!

LOL at your do not answer list. I’m with you on Anne Hathaway – just very recently. Thesuperficial.com tells me she bagged some criminal she was dating, so maybe she’s cuter now that she’s criminal-less? I don’t know, but she doesn’t irk me like she used to. And Kate Winslet, just stunning. She’s my role model for classiness and accentness.
