The 2009 Academy Awards

February 24, 2009 By Dusty Rogers 12 Comments

Oh how I love me some Academy Awards–and this year was no exception! My first-ever Oscar Party was a hit (more on that to come) and I was so happy* for Kate Winslet’s first Oscar win! It was such a great night–but there was one part of the evening that came up a bit short in my opinion:

The Oscar fashion.

Was anyone else left feeling underwhelmed with this year’s gown selections? What was the deal?? I’m guessing they got word that I was getting my own group of glamour gals together for Oscar Night so they decided to phone it in. I get it. And I don’t blame them.

I blame their stylists.

Now I’m generally a positive person by nature, so I don’t want to dwell on my least favorites–but I do feel the need to point out a few:

Beyonce and Halle are absolutely stunning women–there’s no doubt about that–but I just wasn’t feeling the black and gold combination. At all.

Love Reese. Love her movies. But I’m not loving this black and blue number. Ouch.

It looked to me like Jessica Biel needed JT to help her bring sexy back. Yeah.

Without question, the biggest fashion offenders of the evening had the be the 5 former Best Supporting Actresses who awarded Penelope Cruz her Best Supporting Actress Oscar this year. For the first time ever I found these women painful to watch.

Now that’s enough of the not-so-good. Let’s move on to some of my favorite looks of my favorite night! I thought Alicia Keys looks stunning in this pink gown. So pretty!

Okay. If you didn’t already know this about me, now you do. I am an Angelina lover. And a Brangelina lover. I love her. I love him. I love them together. And I want them both to adopt me. Now that doesn’t mean I don’t love Jen–let’s get that straight right off the bat! I love Jen like I love blue jeans, tank tops, and flip flops. And I love Angelina like I love designer handbags and stilettos. All things very much needed in my life–and all equally loved, just in different ways. That said, I’m guessing this will come as no surprise to you, but I thought my favorite designer handbag looked incredible on Oscar night!

I was loving all the pale dresses of the evening–Marisa Tomei, Evan Rachel Wood, SJP, and even Tina Fey. But my hands-down favorite look of the evening went to my newest love–Anne Hathaway. Now she may not have taken home the Oscar, but over this past year this gal skyrocket from my Do Not Call List to my Christmas Card List. And she may or may not have made a few movies somewhere in there. Anne–I love you. Come visit me anytime! (Bring the dress.)

So those were my picks for hits & misses of the evening–who were yours?

I agree with most of your best and worst picks. Beyonce was just way too much, that dress did nothing for her. Goldie Hawn needs to accept her age, oh my. I loved Marisa Tomei, Anne Hathaway, Natalie Portman, Taraji P. Henson. I thought Kate Winslet looked very pretty although that wasn’t my favorite look for her. I thought Angelina looked very pretty, loved the earrings. I think Penelope Cruz is very pretty but I just didn’t love that dress on her.

I loved Halle and Beyonce! I pretty much agree with the rest of your opinion though.

Angelina was my fave — stunning.

Honorable mention – Marissa Tomei, Miley (even though I hate to admit it), and SJP.

And um, you forgot Edward, er, Rob!

Totally agree with you on the good and bad gowns (and your feelings for Angelina and Brad!). I absolutely loved Kate Winslet’s dress, though from what I’ve heard her daughter did not! I thought it was very flattering and just different enough to set her apart. I really liked Penelope Cruz’s, too–vintage and classic!

Blame the stylists. Not every actor knows style…ya know?…but every stylist should…it is a sad day when Reese looks that bad.

I just hated Reese and Jessica’s looks. Awful. I like Alicia Key’s look but her eyes scared me. Bad kitty!

Not only the dress, but did you see the plastic bra straps on Reese?? Tacky Tacky!

I thought Anne Hathaway’s looked absolutly stunning!! She’s finally off my do not call list… but not to the Christmas card list just yet! :)

Reece looked like she forgot about the event until the last minute and borrowed Queen Latifa’s dress, with less than stellar tailoring done just in time. Her hair, makeup and dress were complete disasters.

SJP needed a bigger cup size on her dress. A woman of that certain age – mid 40’s should not be spilling over like that. ruined the whole look for me.

I think Angelina is one of the most beautiful women on the planet, but I am not a big fan…. can’t really explain why..just weird I guess. I saw her when she arrived on the red carpet and she looked like she is seriously ill…. she looked like she was completely shot up with Botox and had that sunken in look about her that I recognize in seriously ill patients. It was weird. Her dresses haven’t been impressive, but she makes a sheet look good, so what can I say there?

I think Penelope’s dress in person was probably much better looking than on camera!

Jessica Biel looks like she’s hiding something. My first thought was a baby bump…that thing was hideous.

Marisa Tomei looked like she’d been involved in a seriously tragic origami collision.

Goldie Hawn looks like she wears the same dress to every function. Get over it girl.

Totally agree with you on the past best supporting actress winners – what the #$% was with their stylists?!?!?! Wonder if Whoopy’s dress was the HOt Topic on Monday’s view? Yikes!

Anne Hathaway and Kate Winslet won the night in my books. Kate’s dress was different, but fit perfectly, suited her well and was interesting.

    Have a great vacation!

I loved Natalie Portman, she was perfect, and so did Anne Hathaway. I though Kate Winslet looked better at the SAG awards in that Narcisso blue dress, but I love Kate !!!

I love hearing your reviews! Yeah, I left Kate out of mine. I wasn’t loving her dress or her hair, but I love HER so much I couldn’t bear to put her on my misses list.

@Cara–that is quite possibly the most detailed comment I’ve ever gotten, lol! I love it!
