About a year ago the water dispenser in our refrigerator door stopped working. Two days later G and I had the following conversation:
G: How much does it bother you that the water dispenser isn’t working?
Me: It’s RUINING MY LIFE!
G: Do you think we need a new fridge? I mean, this one isn’t that old…
Me: What?! No. That is absolutely ridiculous. We are not going to buy a brand new fridge just because this one little thing stopped working.
[Giving G the stare-down…]
We should sell the house.
That’s pretty much been my response to anything house-related over the past few years:
G: We can’t fit anything else in our garage.
D: We should sell the house.
G: Our bedroom is a mess.
D: We should sell the house.
G: Have you seen my keys?
D: We should sell the house.
We bought our home eight years ago thinking we’d only be here for two or three years, and now I’m antsy for a change! And a fireplace… And a mudroom…
After all that nagging helpful encouragement, I have two very exciting things to share: The first is that our water dispenser has magically started working again. Want to know the second thing? Check out my post at Homes.com to find out more!
How exciting!!!! I’m so happy for you and can’t wait to see what you find. I’m a lover of a good fixer upper, so I will be excited to follow along on your journey.
Thank you so much, Kim! I’ll be sure to put you on speed dial when I’m need of tips and advice – you’re a renno queen!
Wonderful news! I will be following along and can’t wait to see where the journey takes you!
Thank you so much, Diane! It’s an exciting next step!
Good luck on your search! I’ve referred to our house hunting as casual shopping. We don’t go out and just look at all the houses in our area in our price. I find a house I like and call our Realtor to look at it. We’ve looked at 5 houses over the course of 3-4 years. We have no NEED to move we just really WANT to get out of our apartment. That gives us the opportunity to search for the best house we can afford, instead of settling for something. Have fun hunting.
Yes! Love that laid back attitude. I hope your patience pays off with the home of your dreams!
I envy you! House hunting for real (instead of just browsing www real estate sites) is FUN! You wrote that you want to downsize to something smaller – why? Usually people dream of more room for their family. Could you tell us the reasons for wanting to go smaller rather than bigger?
Thanks Joanna – we’re having a lot of fun with it! Our house is bigger than we need and honestly I’m terrible at keeping it all clean! We have 5 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms. It’s just too much. We also don’t plan on having any more children, so this is far more space than our little family of 3 needs. I’m hoping our next house has less square footage, but honestly I’d just be happy with a DIFFERENT use of space. Fewer bedrooms and more of what we DO need like a mud room, laundry room, etc.
Man, I go on vacation and come back to you moving?!?! How exciting! And you’ve described my dream house exactly — less square footage (which equals less stuff!) and a home I can love back to life. We’d also like a yard for our girls to play and run, and I want a garden! Best of luck to your family on this new adventure, Dusty!
That all sounds perfect, Carla! Thank you so much for the well wishes. We’re excited!
How exciting! We just moved into a new home in January and did some renovations, so I’m excited to see how this journey goes for you. Will you be linking to your Homes.com posts on here so we can keep up?
Thank you so much, Jill! I hope your move and home renovations have been as headache-free as possible! Yes, I will be linking up my posts to Homes.com on here so you’ll know when they’re over there. Thank you so much for following along!
Dusty, this is super exciting! But it would be the MOST exciting if the new home were here in you know where!

G and I were talking about if there was anywhere else in the country we’d like to move and I said (in the midst of a drastically hot Midwestern day), “I’d love to live somewhere where it’s rarely colder than freezer and never hotter than 80 degrees. Is there anywhere – anywhere?! – that doesn’t have these extreme temperature changes?!”
“Sounds like Seattle,” he replied.
Maybe someday, jbhat!
