To Belt or Not To Belt?

November 5, 2009 By Dusty Rogers 58 Comments

Jersey cardigan: Gap
Sleeveless sweater: Old Navy
Jeans: Gap Maternity
Tweed belt: Gap
Boots: Nine West
Pregnancy: 27 weeks

I’m a big fan of the belted look–even throughout my pregnancy–and probably sport a belt around above my belly about once a week.

But I know it’s not a look for everyone, so tell me what you think! What is your personal preference when it comes to the belted look? Do you consider it a fashion do or a fashion don’t? And does your opinion change when it comes to belting a big ol’ baby bump?

That’s a good question! Hmm… you pull it off really well! Now for myself on the other hand, I’m not sure. I’m short so I’m not sure that I could pull it off. I will definitely try it out when I grow a baby bump someday :)

I haven’t thought of the idea with the belt before until I saw your pictures wearing it like this. I think it looks fabulous on you and tried it out myself. I don’t what it is or if my big tummy makes it look strange on me, but it just isn’t made for my preggy belly, unfortunately! :-( And I’ve noticed that I was way thinner without that huge tummy (and probably all that extra weight from ice cream, pizza, etc. ;-))and that the belts are pretty much getting to short now šŸ˜‰

This look is not flattering. It almost looks like it is squishing your chest. I think the belted look creates a shorter waist.

I think it looks a little uncomfortable. I love the look when you sport it without your baby belly, but with your belly … I think your belly alone should be the star of the show!

i like the belted look, though these days more often on other ppl than myself b/c i feel like belts just accentuate my post-baby flab.

as for on you, i say, anything to bring attention to your adorable belly is great! i loved showing off my belly when i was pg! you’ve maintainted your style throughout your pregnancy, giving hope to all the moms-to-be out there who feel like it’s hard to be cute when you’re pg!

i can’t wait to see how you continue to be stylish with spit up and baby drool on everything b/c that’s where i am right now and it’s hard! šŸ˜‰

i definitely dont like it. I mean, its cute with soooome things maybe if the top is looser, but with a buttoned cardigan definitely not. Or with anything tight, whats the point? It just looks out of place.

So my vote is fashion dont. especially pregnant.

Wow- people really have strong opinions about an accessory! I like the look with sweaters and wish I could pull it off myself (but it ends up making upper body look like a triangle- my hips being the base!). With fashion, I think “to each his own.” Wear what you like- you can pull off the belt with the bump and it puts those belts to use for the 9 months!

I love the belted look on you! You wear it well. I’m hoping to try it one day but I guess that would mean I have to go belt shopping.

Since you asked, I’m not sure I’m lovin’ the belt with what you’re wearing in this pic. I think a fun necklace (maybe chunky and/or long with multiple strands) would look nice.

Regardless, I think you look fantabulous!

I think when the belt touches your boobs, then it becomes a don’t. :) But I’m guessing you were thinking that already otherwise you wouldn’t have requested advice. I LOVE the belted look and think you rock the the look. But now that the baby has taken over you might have to wait until post pregnancy to rock it again.

I love the look personally but my thought is that after a certain point – once the belly officially hits the boobs – it starts to look more awkward than cute. I seriously doubt you could ever look awkward but that was my rule of thumb while pregnant ;P

You do the belt so well! I would’ve never thought to keep it going with a bump – but it looks great!

I am afraid of pulling off the belt because I have a small waist and belting that waist makes my wide hips look wider (in my eyes). I don’t want people questioning if I should truly beep when I back up. :)

oh and i think too its because you do it so often. once a week? really? Every now and again its a cute little surprise. Thats what makes it fashionable. But when its weekly, it just gets old and too repetitive. Like you’re trying too hard.

i am a huge fan of belts – skinny, fat and everything in between. i think it’s a great way to accessorize an ouftit (especially dresses) and I don’t think there’s such a thing as wearing a belt too much (especially if they are all different!).

that being said – it might be time to hang up the belt until the pregnancy is over. you have amazing fashion sense – but i do agree with what a few other people said – that once a belt touches your boobs – it’s probably time to stop wearing it. Your baby bump is cute on it’s own!

i do want to reiterate that i think you have amazing style, though! you’ve managed to look adorable all through your pregnancy! :)

Belt is cute, but wearing it that high up makes it look like some kind of leather undergarment. But hey, that kind of thing is popular with a lot of people!

You’ve pulled off belted looks pretty well, but I’m not a fan of the pregnant belted look. I do like the other few preggo-belted-belly looks, but not so much today. Your belly is just too high and it looks like the belt is squishing the boobies a little much. Sorry!

    On today’s topic…

I would retire the belt until after baby. Loved the teal & yellow, but as a pregnancy progresses, something you could pull off with tiny bump doesn’t work with big bump.

Generally I really like the belted look (on you… sadly, it doesn’t fit my body type at all, pregnant or not), but I’m not a fan today. It’s not because you’re belly is getting bigger, I just don’t like the v-neck, cardigan, belt combo.

That’s just my opinion. You’re confidence gives you the ability to wear a lot more than most women!

Def a fashion DON’T with a big prego belly. Earlier pic’s with a tiny little bump accentuate the belly and make you look preg (as you should after all show if off and draw attention to it!). I think, like other posters, you should retire the belts for a bit. Actually, on this outfit- it looks like you have an elastic belt on and it just “slid” up and got lodged there~~sorry, but you did ask after all. I do say–keep wearing the tighter outfits–that is enough to show off the bod!! Do you ever wear maternity shirts? I don’t think I’ve seen any shirts posted, just the GAP pants, they must be comfy.

I love the belted look, but not when you are this far along. In my opinion, it looks as if your boobs are being held up by your belt. It probably doesn’t help that you have a v-neck on and everything comes to a point at the belt.

With that said, I love it with your Little Black Dress, Layered Look and Teal and Yellow. When it comes down to it, you should wear whatever you feel comfortable in, so keep sporting the belt if you love it. Also, fashion is about taking risks, I admire those who do.

Thank you for being gutsy enough to wear what you love and blog about it. I hope I look half as good as you do during my first pregnancy.

As my stylist says, there are lots of trends popular right now. Become familiar with them and decide what is right for you. Of your belted outfits posted, my favorite is the layered look.

You may want to switch to a thinner belt now. Because of your growing belly, the belt should be thinner to balance out the proportion.
