Things Loved In April
1. The smell of fresh cut grass. Mmmmmmmm. One of my favorite signs of spring!

2. Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution.

Have you seen this show?? I am shocked and appalled at the crap our kids are eating in our schools. SHOCKED AND APPALLED!! I told G that Jamie Oliver better bring his "revolution" to Madison, WI before Kate starts school or she'll be brown bagging it everyday! For those of you who don't know what I'm talking about, Jamie Oliver is a chef from the UK who is currently in America trying to revolutionize the way we eat--his main focus being getting all the processed foods out of schools, and replacing it with healthy school meals cooked from fresh ingredients. It's on ABC and there were only a few episodes, but hopefully they'll show reruns this summer (or you could watch it online at abc.com). I really hope this show comes back for another season because it's incredibly eye-opening, and I really hope it's able to make a difference. If this sounds like a cause you'd like to get behind too, please take a few seconds to sign Jamie's petition and show your support for fresh and healthy meals in our children's schools!
3. Waterproof mascara.

Kate started daycare earlier this month, so waterproof mascara has been a daily must-have. I plan to write more later about returning to work and Kate starting daycare, so I won't go into detail here, other than to say that without my waterproof mascara things would be getting pretty ugly pretty quickly!
4. Scarves.

Yes, they're all cute and springy and fashionable, but over this past month I've found they serve an additional purpose--hiding leakage. Oh sure, you think it'll never happen TO YOU, but then one afternoon you're running late at the dentist's office and you look down, and WHOAMIGAWD, WHEN THE HELL DID THIS HAPPEN?? And then you're frantically searching your car for something--ANYTHING!--that can help you and half-wishing you were still in college when you pretty much carried a laundry basket of clothes in your backseat at all times, and wondering if you can rig a floor mat and a bungee cord to somehow pass as a shirt...and then you spot a scarf. Oh sweet glorious fabric that falls so perfectly over the baby feeders. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
...Of course this would never happen TO ME.
I'm just saying.
Hypothetically speaking.
Scarves: Don't leave home without one.
5. Newborn babies--and wow did we welcome a lot of them over this past month!
First my sister Apryl, her husband Keith, and son Rylee welcomed my handsome and oh-so-cuddly newest nephew Everett James (EJ) on March 31st. Technically not an "April Baby" but his due date was April 2nd, so I'm going to sneak him in here!

On April 26th our friends Sara and Nick welcomed their adorable son, Cash Stephen, to the world:

Then my friend Kent and her husband Adam welcomed the fashionably late and absolutely gorgeous Sarah Elizabeth (Sarah Beth) on April 27th:

The beautiful Taylor Lucy joined her proud parents Matt and Erica on April 29th:

And last but not least, our friends Lisa and Jason greeted their third child--a daughter named Lia--who is so new I don't even have a picture of her yet!
Congratulations to all the beautiful new babies and proud new parents in our lives! I can't wait to snuggle and cuddle with you! (<--The babies, not the parents. Although I may snuggle and cuddle with their parents too if it meant I could get a few extra minutes of sleep. I'm willing to negotiate.)

YES! I love Jamie Olivers Food Revolution! He is doing such a great thing by getting out to the schools, even if it's just the one county in one state. Hopefully it will make people realize that school lunches are made of crap and as parents, we need to be the ones to say something!
Careful with the waterproof mascara...I've read many times over the years in the beauty tips section of magazines and such that b/c the mascara holds so strong onto your eyelashes that when you wash it off your eyelashes fall out!!! Not all of them, of course, but I hate to lose even one since the FULL look is 'in' for lashes. Just don't put regular mascara on the bottom lashes, then when you cry it doesn't run :)
Dude, you just told the world why I am wearing scarves in the 90 degree southern heat. THANKS. I was trying to play the fashion card but it is totally to hide leaky bubbies.
Food Revolution is a great show!
I haven't seen the food rev. yet and I'm dying to! Everyone raves about it.
P.S. those duck pj's are pretty much the cutest thing I've ever seen.
So many cute babies! Congrats to all the new families and thanks for sharing. Also, pretty sure my biological clock is about to explode after this post.
Oh, how I love little babies! And I agree, the fresh cut grass has been the best smell over the last month.
I am so grateful for Jamie Oliver's campaigning. My kids are both on packed lunches now, but Daniel did 2 years of school dinners when he first started school and the food was awesome - fresh, varied, healthy. Even their (small) desserts always had fruit in - e.g. apple pie, chocolate and blueberry muffin, peach muffin, fruit salad, etc.
Oh yeah.......LOVE LOVE LOVE the smell of fresh cut grass. And the smell of the grill. Of course we are true Wisconsites and grill year round but sitting there and smelling it is a whole spring like thing!
I have been brown bagging since kindergargen with my daughter (now 11). That way I know what and how much she's eating.
Hang in there with the daycare. It is hard hard hard!
I so hear you on the daycare, and I always love to hear how other women are handling it because every day I swear I'm quitting my job and staying home! Hang in there :)
I'm with you on the fresh cut grass! I love that smell - and lilacs!
I think the sack lunch is the way to go, my kids are in 5th and 7th grade and between the two of them have had school lunch about 10 times during their school career!! Plus in our school if the kids don't like what is being served they get an apple and uncrustable PB&J, and I have a hard time justifying $2.25 a day per kid for that!! I can buy some good food for $90 bucks a month, and it is stuff I know that the kids will eat.
@Niki--Thanks for the tip, but with the way these eyes have been crying over this past month I don't think just forgoing the lower lashes would have cut it, sad to say. I've been using a waterproof eye-makeup remover and letting it sit on my lashes for a really long time before trying to wash the mascara off. That seems to be working pretty well, and hopefully most of my lashes are still in tact. I'm with you--I certainly don't want to lose any!
Sorry Kathleen! Cat's outta the bag! ;)
@Jen M--That's so great! I'm so impressed with what it sounds like he's already done over there!
@Jill--Oooh yes, the smell of the grill! Another good one!
Those babies are so cute... They are such a blessing.
Now that we're on the topic of mascara, I have to pass along my FAVORITE. MASCARA. EVER. It is called Blink, and it basically creates tubes around each individual eyelash, and is freakin' awesome! I first wore it on my wedding day and have been hooked ever since! I used to get it at ANiU in Madison...not sure if they still sell it or not. Seriously, give it a try! :-)
Aww cute cuddly babies in my birthday month!! Awesome! :p
And can you believe that my husband wants another?! Kylee isn't even a year old!!
And its truth about the mascara... my eyelashes are no longer full and long and -- full! Because I'm too impatient to let my remover sit on my eyes. It's so sad.
Those babies are all so adorable.
I love the smell of fresh cut grass and just Spring in general!
I remember going back to work full time after my first baby (now 16) was born. Hang in there!!
