A Bedtime Conversation

April 19, 2012 By Dusty Rogers 18 Comments

I was cradling Kate in my arms “like a baby” at bedtime tonight.  We had just finished reading a story and I was about to begin our prayers when she looked at me carefully and said, “I love your hair, Mama.”

I laughed in surprise and replied, “Oh! Thank you, Kate!”

“And I love your eyes,” she added, pointing to each of my eyes.

“Aww, thank you Kate.  That is so sweet of you to say,” I replied with a smile and a cuddle.

“I love your cheeks, and your forehead, and your ears, and your mouth, and your teeth,” she added, pointing to each one as she said them.

Then she put her tiny little hands on each of my cheeks to hold my face and whispered, “I love everything.”

My heart burst as I snuggled her tight, covered her in kisses and exclaimed, “Oh Kate, I love everything about you, too!”

I continued cradling my precious girl in my arms as I began our bedtime prayer the same way I have every night for the past 2 years and 3 months:  “Dear God, thank you for my wonderful daughter Kate.  She is the joy of my world…”

    Absolutely precious!!!!
    I have my nephew on Tuesday nights, and he and J were going back and forth playing “my Ber (my nickname because W wasn’t able to say amber for a long time)”… W always gets super possessive, but last night, out of nowhere, he countered with “I love Ber!”… it made me want to cry… I love this age!!!

    Absolutely adorable. :)

    Anna and I have had similar conversations and it does grip your heart. It’s more powerful and amazing than anything else I’ve experienced.

    When my daughter was born, a friend told me: “welcome to the hardest job you’ll ever love.” And while I do believe that to be true on some levels, experiences like yours are what makes it so easy. :)

    Your story made me tear up, right here at work. I’m looking forward to the time when my daughter can vocalize thoughts like that, and praying that she’ll feel the same way about me that Kate feels about you!

    That is SO SWEET! I almost died of the cute when my son went up to my husband last night and said “I love you daddy, you’re the best dad in the whole wide world!”

    :::insert obnoxious cry from a hormonal pregnant woman here:::

    Kids are the best! (Ahem, most of the time.)

    She is very smart, highly articulate, very observant…and incredibly sweet to boot. What a nice combination! You guys are clearly wonderful parents.

    Thank you so much for all of your touching comments everyone.

    @The L: It absolutely does. And thank you!

    @Anonymous: I can’t even express how much your comment touched my heart. Thank you so much.

    @Caroline: Congratulations on the upcoming arrival of your granddaughter. Oh you are going to have so much fun!

    Thank you Christel!

    @Kate: ABSOLUTELY.

    @Amber: Awww, love that story. So sweet.

    @Natalie: I totally agree sweetie. <3

    Thank you Jen.

    @Carla B: What a great quote. It may not be easy but nothing makes me happier!

    @Megan: Totally worth it.

    Thank you so much, Julie. I’m sure your daughter will feel that way about you as well!

    @MSHammond: I did! Sometimes its so hard to put her in her crib at bedtime. I just want to cuddle with her all night long. There have been a few times I’ve come so close to asking her, “You sure you want to go to bed? Why don’t you just stay up with Mama?” just before I tuck her in. I treasure our time together so much. You never get these days back!

    Thank you Mrs. LB!

    @Jenni: I literally “aww”‘d at that! How wonderful!

    Thank you so much jbhat–what a wonderful thing for you to say! <3

    Thank you Diane! ::hugs::
