My Ugly Shirt

October 29, 2009 By Dusty Rogers 20 Comments

Shirt: Liz Lange for Target Maternity
Jeans: Gap (regular jeans, worn with a maternity band)
Boots: Nine West
Pregnancy: 27 weeks

While shopping in Target’s maternity section I spotted this multi-colored paisley shirt and immediately thought:

That has got to be the ugliest shirt I’ve ever seen. Who the hell would buy that??

A few minutes later I walked by it again and thought:

Ugh. Seriously that shirt is so ugly.

:::stared at it for a minute:::

I have to try it on.

So I took my ugly shirt to the fitting room, tried it on, and looked in the mirror:

This shirt is hideous.

I love it.

I have to have it.

I don’t know what it was, but I went from hating it to totally falling in love with it in no time! It’s now one of my favorite maternity tops and every time I put it on I can’t help but think:

Wow this shirt is ugly. I love it so much!

I added this dark purple cardigan from Gap (which covered up some of the ugly) when I got cold.
I guess that expression is true–there really is a thin line between love and hate!

You’re rockin’ that “ugly” shirt! Perhaps Liz Lange should pay you to model it – you do it waaayy more justice than a hanger!

    :-)

I love the shirt!!! Definitely one I would have bought for myself as well. I really like maternity shirts that aren’t just solid colors, so this one is perfect. And the cardigan “calms it down” a little bit (although I think without it looks great too). Great find!

You know that saying “It looked better on the hanger?” Well sometimes it looks better off the hanger too šŸ˜‰

You crack me up, Dusty! Of course you make that super ugly shirt look super hot! I’ve been wanting to get some patterned shirts, thanks for the inspiration:)

Too funny – I’ve picked that shirt up a million times, including yesterday as it was on sale for $8 – and just can’t commit to buying it. :) I got it in a pretty new purple and white print instead (alas, not on sale). Perhaps I should rethink the crazy paisleys…looks cute on you!

Um… would it be bad for me to go to Target and buy it even though I’m not pregnant? Because I love it! :giggle

I have that same shirt and I thought the same thing at first! When I wear I do wear something over it! You look fab in it, however it’s just too much for me and my bazoombas to hadle by itself! I put a sweater or vest over mine! You are rockin it, I must say!

I agree, ugly in a vintage sort of way. You have great maternity style!

If you get a moment come by my blog and say hi, I blogged about new mommies today and you’re one of them :)

Way more chic with the cardi. Maybe it would look nice with a solid color scarf too. I’m sure it was hideous on the rack but the colors really suit you, sometimes you just have to try things on before you can love them.

Hi Dusty! We’ve never met here in blog land but I’ve been following for awhile. I love what you’ve done to your house! AND we are just about parallel on our pregnancies…that and I’m from the midwest originally, so lots of reasons to follow your blog :) I have an “ugly shirt” too. :) I love it. My husband hates it. O well, he’s not walking around carrying the 5 lb bowling ball in his belly :) I say your shirt is uber cute…just might have to go find one for myself!

I’m wondering……does G ever say anything about your wardrobe??? My hubby says everything looks nice even when I say…..”I don’t think this looks very good, do you?” I def like it more with the cardigan over it–it is very retro and busy and I agree though with the pp that a plain scarf would tame it down too. You pull it off well though! And hey, it’s a shirt that you can wear in future pregnancy’s too cuz it’s a timeless look!!

    Thanks everyone!

@The Johnson’s–I agree w/you. It’s nice to wear a pattern every once in awhile, and I feel like you don’t see that as often in maternity tops.

@Lisa–Thanks for the shout-out. That’s so sweet of you!

@Danielle–Sounds like we have a lot in common! Congrats on your pregnancy, and thanks for saying hi!

@Anonymous–Hmm, good question! I honestly don’t think I’ve ever asked G how he thought I looked in something. Is that strange? I mean maybe I have once or twice, but I can’t for the life of me think of when. When I’m getting ready for work or to go out he will say, “You look nice, sweetie” which is nice. I’d say he says that more days than not, so that’s good!

I was also drawn in by the “ugly shirt” at Target. I couldn’t stop thinking about it after I first saw it so I had to go back and make it mine. I also got the “hideous green” color today since they are on clearance for $7.48!
