Kate's First Fingerpainting

Kate: 20 Months
I've been having fun introducing Kate to arts & crafts.  First it was crayons, then came play dough--and now fingerpainting!  Kate is very cautious by nature so I wasn't quite sure how she'd like fingerpainting, but she loves smearing spilled milk all over the table so I had a feeling this would be right up her alley.

I taped down some newspaper, followed by a blank sheet of paper, and then I dotted various spots on the paper with little globs of paint.  All it took was me giving one color one teeny little smear for Kate to understand and want to get her little fingers in on the action:

A toothpick adds the finishing touches:

And a section of the finished product made the perfect addition for this year's Grandparent's Day gift!

It was such a fun project, and surprisingly not as messy as I thought it would be--just be sure to buy washable paints!

Kate's artwork is fantastic. She seems way more into getting messy than my now 3 year old ever was!

If you want to make "real art" with her fingerpainting try doing the masterpiece that we did with my little one (http://explanationrequired.blogspot.com/2010/07/messy-masterpiece.html). I have it hanging in our spare room/craft room now and love it! Seems like something Kate would enjoy.

The card is super cute! My 24 month old son loves to paint but I never made a card out of his artwork & we may have to do some for Christmas! :)

Great idea with the toothpick at the end to finish it off. It's a masterpiece for sure!

Super cute. I should be more adventurous about that sort of thing. Not so worried about MESS.

@Katie--LOVE your daughter's fingerpainting, and that quote is fantastic! What a great idea!

@Beth--I've since picked her up some cheapy paint brushes, but the toothpick worked well in a pinch. She really enjoyed it!

@jbhat--Our whole house is covered in a thin layer of grime, so the worst case scenario in my mind was that little splashes of crayola could only improve matters.
