Tile Shop Tuesday: My Kitchen Backsplash Reveal!

December 11, 2012 By Dusty Rogers 18 Comments

After weeks of drooling over the gorgeous tile selections at The Tile Shop, taking a fantastic, hands-on DIY tile class, and diving into my own tiling and grouting adventures – it’s time for my DIY kitchen backsplash reveal!

Our new kitchen DIY tile backsplash (click to enlarge)!
The tile is Riviera Beach from The Tile Shop – a mosaic mix of travertine stone and shiny glass.

I had a tricky spot at the end of my kitchen backsplash where the countertop and upper cabinets didn’t line up.  I had to take my tile backsplash all the way to the end of the counterops, which meant it extended beyond the upper cabinets.  I decided to hang a couple of picture frames, tucked slightly into that nook, to help visually offset this:

Managing a tricky spot where the counterop and upper cabinets don’t line up.

While prepping the kitchen for tiling, G and I decided to get rid of the phone jack placed directly above the outlet on this end of the wall.   In additional “taking our kitchen into 2013” news, we decided to replace the standard outlet that was here with a USB outlet:

This thing is so cool!  It charges my iPhone and our iPods with no adapter needed – we just plug the USB port right into one of the two slots next to the outlet!

It blows me away to see what a difference our new tile backsplash has made to our kitchen!  I thought it looked great after we upgraded our countertops, but the depth and warmth of those gorgeous glass and stone tiles just takes it to a whole ‘nother level!  Check out these before, during, and after pictures and see for yourself:

A great big, HUGE, thank you goes out to The Tile Shop!  It it wasn’t for their help and guidance I’d probably be in the middle of a kitchen demo right now (ripping down my foiled DIY attempt), but instead I’m sitting in my kitchen, sipping wine and sighing proudly over this beautiful transformation.

It came out fantastic! Well done you! I love that you added the USB outlet, that wasn’t something I initially thought of for my own kitchen renovation and now I’m adding it to the plan.

Great job, Dusty! You rocked this project OUT! Perfect choice of tile for your house, too! Looks just like I pictured it when you described it in the frog pool at Watercolor. :)

It looks so good! I can’t believe you did the backsplash all on your own! I love those usb outlets too, so much more useful than a phone jack!

Thank you so much, everyone! We’re so excited with how well it turned out. Such a rewarding DIY project!!

@Heidi: Good luck with your kitchen reno – I’m sure it will look incredible in the end!

@Beth: It’s hard not to embellish when sitting in a pool surrounded by glass mosaic tiled frogs, so I’m glad I did it justice, hahaha!

Nice work on the tiling. It looks great. My countertops are in your “during” stage, but as we get closer to being ready to tile, I’m curious about something. Did you consider removing the “lip” of granite that goes up the wall a little? If so, why did you decide not to?

Hi Amber! It’s a GE Profile, but I’m sorry I don’t know the model number. I do know it was purchased about 10 years ago when this house was built. It’s a great fridge – I really loved it!

It looks really nice. What if you continued the tile to the door with a nice trim? I’m remodeling our kitchen and I want to take the tile backsplash all the way from door trim to window trim even if the cabinets and counters end. I’m thinking not a lot of people are doing that and I am having a hard time finding a picture [so I can convince my husband how nice it would look]. What do you think?
